Perhaps I'm misunderstanding here.

Diald has no way of knowing when you have stopped using Netscape. It will
use the exact same timeout values for traffic no matter if Netscape is open
or closed.

If you want to immediately shut down the link after you finish then you need
to manually close it. The easiest way to do this is will a
control/monitoring program such as dctrl (think that's spelled right not at
my linux box right now) which comes with diald (in the source packages, I
don't think folks have added it in the binary rpms) or dialmon.

[I prefer the dialmon interface but both will work well in Xwindows and
dialmon adds some additional configuration that you have to deal with.]

Since you are browsing on the same machine that is running diald then you
can simply echo down to a diald control pipe.

add the line 'fifo /etc/diald.ctl' to your diald.conf file. Then you can
'echo down > /etc/diald.ctl' to shut down the connection whenever you want
to. (you can also echo any other command to the pipe to control the
connection.)

dctrl or dialmon is much handier in Xwindows. echo can always be used and
is the easiest solution if you spend much time in console mode. [Xwindows
on my 486 with 4meg mem is a joke.]

Hope this helps,

Lourdes
