Paolo,

One question:  Is there mail queued for outside of your domain prior to bringing
up sendmail?  You probably want the connection up anyway.

If not, then create a file named /etc/service.switch with the following in it:

hosts files dns

This will tell sendmail to look at your host file first before going to DNS.  It
may also be beneficial to bring up your ISP connection, run tcpdump on ppp0, then
bring up sendmail to verify why sendmail is bringing up the connection.  This will
also tell you what host to add to your /etc/host file.  There are some other
sendmail features available to inhibit DNS.  I would suggest reading the Sendmail
Installation and Operation Guide (/usr/doc/sendmail/doc/op/op.ps if you installed
documentation) around pages 29 & 30.
