Make sure you have your news and mail servers defined in your /etc/hosts
file. Netscape seems to do a DNS lookup of those upon startup. Also, if not
already done, add the following to ~/.netscape/libpres.js:
user_pref("mailnews.start_page.enabled", false);
Stop netscape before editting the file.
