My Redhat 6.x has always said "demand dialling".  I think it is part of the title as 
opposed to how it was invoked.

BTW:  Make sure your ppp-options file is empty nor non-existant, and try removing the 
ipcp-accept-remote and possibly
ipcp-accept-local options.  I remember having some trouble with 6.1 and 
ipcp-accept-remote is commented out of my
diald.conf file.  My pppd-options line is as follows:

pppd-options asyncmap 0 user xxxxxxxx remotename rrrrrrrrr
