YES!!! it is now working...
thanks to all, I finally find out the problem. It was lying in the
/etc/sysconfig/network file. The GATEWAY was wrong, however, since
it didn't appear in the routing table, I was confused.
For the benefit of everyone.
The 192.168.0.1 (or any other dummy address that will be changed if dynamic
keyword is present in /etc/diald.conf) must exist in order to bring up the tap0
interface and the entry is created by diald from the local and remote addresses
in the diald.conf file. The default route was created for this address by
changing the GATEWAY=10.1.1.254 in /etc/sysconfig/network to
GATEWAY=192.168.0.1.
Thanks Christian for the tips to prevent the annoying
message for the char-major-108.
