Sounds like:
- Packet gets sent.
- Diald notices:
- Calls chat to initialize modem.
- Calls pppd to start PPP negotiation.
- PPP negotiation fails (wrong password?)
- pppd drops the line.
- Diald thinks dialing failed, and tries again.
...
To fix this:
- increase the minimum time diald waits between calls (to avoid huge
phone bills)
- Find out why pppd fails:
look in /var/log/messages (or /usr/adm/messages, or ...).
If there isn't enough info, add 'debug' to /etc/pppd/options.
