I have been using ATMEL PEROMS. These are similar to paralell EEPROMS except
you may only use page write mode and not byte mode (i.e. you write something
like 128 bytes (alighned) in a go, size of page depends on memory size, but is
very small compared to typical FLASH).
The advantage of these beasts (WRT EEPROM) is they cost a lot less than EEPROM
and come in bigger densities, nearly as big as flash, and nearly as cheap, and
yet writing is almost comparable to writing to a disk sector.
