Now _this_ is what I was looking for.  Note to self: check the development 
kernels before asking questions.

This approach seems to be far superior to the serial-echo patch available 
from various sources, which, unfortunately, also seems to go by the name 
"serial console patch" (this one just has a quick hack to allow echoing 
printk messages to a hardcoded serial port).  While I can't remember where 
I got that one from, it was one of the places listed in the "headless 
non-PC x86" thread from October.

Unfortunately, I seem to be having interrupt problems when I use it; there 
is a 5-second delay between typed characters and the echoed character.  As 
soon as I get that solved, I can lose embedded-DOS forever!
