The idea of using a microcontroller for the watch dog functions sounds good. I would prefer an in circuit programmable one, perhaps the smallest Atmel AVR. They also contain quite a bit of EEPROM, e.g. for stroring configuration data for the application. Programming could be done via three unused I/O-pins on the board. This would enable the user to fully reprogram the chip without removing it from the board. Regards O A Olsen
