We normally a 60MB SanDISK on the IDE bus for our flash based
devices. Unit boots via lilo, to a read only maint package on the
drive, or loads one of multiple sets of kernel, filesystem, and config
files, and runs on a ramdrive via initrd.
It is nice to have a complete emergency main image + space for
5 complete kernel/ramdisk image/configs on one disk, and the system
only touches flash during emergency maint or boot.
