I have one of these. I think these devices are designed to be connected
directly to your motherbaord. If you want to use a ribbon cable, you
need two ribbon cables with two male headers. (Careful there...the
center row of a ribbon cable will blow if you do this backwards...I've
got one on my wall to prove it :-)
The on-board DOM controller could probably be used as a master or a
slave. I suspect this controller is highly related to the controller
used for Compact Flash. Yes, they can be strapped for master or slave
but the controller will not actually work as a slave. (In fact, they
will scramble the bits of your hard drive when used as an IDE slave
device.)
It's best to use one IDE channel for the DOM only. Although, I gave up
using the IDE for development. The CF access using Floppy, USB or PCMCIA
interface devices are dynamic and easier to use than IDE. My CF resides
on IDE for our products operation, but never again for product
development.
(BTW, as a commodity, CF will always be cheaper than M-Systems or DOM or
whatever other proprietary flash device comes out...volume wins every
time).
Good luck...
