I'm sorry that I can't be more help, but you might find this sort of
upgrade a lot easier on a system that is designed to be upgraded using
distributed binary packages, like Red Hat or Debian or SuSE.

You should never have to compile the system library yourself; usually,
it is a very long process. Similarly, you wouldn't want to compile XFree86
yourself (it takes hours).
