If you get a "kernel too large," it means the kernel is too large.  LILO has
to be able to load the kernel image and it is a real mode program, subject
to the limits of the Intel x86 real address mode.

There is, luckily, more than one compression system.

Try:

make bzImage

instead of

make zImage

and you should have better luck.
