I actually have deleted quite a bit of this this thread, because it old and
much repeated stuff. But I notice that everybody always seems to say 'make
(b)zImage' which is something I never bother to do.
For some considerable period it has been possible to say:-
make install
This has the magical property of doing whatever is the right thing in the
circumstances and, provided you have edited your /etc/lilo.conf for the
anticipated change, will set up your MBR as well as copy your (b)zImage to
your /boot partition (as well as the system map), reset all the symbolic
links, copy your existing vmlinuz to vmlinuz.old and generally save all this
angst.
It doesn't absolve you from saying:
make modules: make modules_install
but then that isn't normally quite the problem oversize kernels are.
Why doesn't everybody use this?
