Well, I might add that this thread helped me to get rid of the Millenium
Bug on my buggy 1994 Award BIOS (no wonder they were swallowed by
Phoenix). It motivated me to read and ask enough to get thru.
I have a 486 DX2/66 motherboard that SURPRISED me by not accepting year
2000 from the setup, it jumps to year 2094. There is one cure from Phoenix
BIOS that inserts two devices in config.sys and solves the problem under
MSDOS, BUT then Linux reads 1994 at boot.
Finally, I arrived at a bit more convoluted solution by creating a boot
diskette using Y2000PRO.EXE from Phoenix, and disregarding all the
warnings that it does not work with LILO and Linux, I set the Y2K cure on
the MBR for a MSDOS only system.
Then, I reinstalled Linux and set LILO to the /boot (10 MB, hda2)
partition. Removed the bootable flag from MSDOS (/dev/hda1) and set
/dev/hda2 bootable. I set /dev/hda1 for 40 Mb, then /dev/hda2 for 10 Mb,
so it is well under the "half gigabyte BIOS boot barrier".
Now, at boot time, it reads the MBR and applies the BIOS patch, then jumps
to the LILO: prompt, and everything else works like before (pre 2000)
from there on.
Date and time are CORRECT, so maybe if anyone has had the bad luck I have
had with an othewise fully functional motherboard, and was discouraged by
the warnings, might disregard them and do like I did.
I would even say that this may be a way to use some other devices that
install in the MBR and would otherwise conflict with LILO.
It is a pity that the Phoenix Y2000PRO boot diskette warnings have been so
misleading, because it works, even when it has not been easy to find the
way out.
