You can run 2.2 on Debian 2.1 (slink). It works just fine, out of the box; almost all of the tools support 2.2 and 2.0 (deliberately). There may even be 2.2 sources included, although there are no 2.2 compiled kernels. Debian 2.2 (potato) has Linux 2.2.14 (or will do soon).
