It's possible that your version of X doesn't support your Starfighter card. You
might want to check if the latest version of XFree86 (3.3.3) supports your card
(http://www.xfree86.org).

At the same time, I would suggest that you don't start trying by using 32bpp (32
bits-per-pixel) as resolution. Try using 8bpp (use "startx -bpp 8") instead.

As for the Xconfigurator problem, insert your RedHat CD (if you got one), cd to
RedHat/RPMS and try using the rpm located there. In RedHat-5.2, that would be:

$ mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
$ cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
$ ls Xconf*
Xconfigurator-3.82-1.i386.rpm
$

After that, install it:
$ rpm -i Xconfigurator-3.82-1.i386.rpm

Xconfigurator should now run without problems.

If you don't have a Redhat CD, the RPM can be found on most "main" FTP servers.

Let me know of your progress.

        / Patrik

Dear Moriarty !

Thanks for your post. I just want to show my respect for your response
to that lunatic kid.
Your article was very helpful. In my case, it took jut enough time to
calm down and *not* flame that feller !
Anyway, I guess he doesn't have any real problems (at least not with
computers!) or he'd behave himself. (Is there a group like
alt.psych.firstaid.* ?)
I will follow someone's suggestion and add that guy to my ignore list !
Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us.

Happy New Year !

Sorry I snipped your letter almost entirely, but it has been quoted so

Does anyone of you know of any tools which will recover my data??

I've got a Zoom Model 2919 "Dualmode" internal modem. I don't
know an Australian model number. It's PnP, but can be jumpered
to disable PnP, allowing jumpers to be used to set the IRQ, COM
port, and I/O address. Setup instructions and software are
provided for NT, so it should work for you. I'm having no
problem with it in a linux machine. I also used the modem on the
same machine under Win95 (briefly) with no problems.

Before buying the modem, I contacted various manufacturers and
asked about linux.

I asked Boca about their Tidalwave modems, but the answer was not
very useful. I didn't buy the Boca modem due to doubts about
linux compatibility.

Zoom told me that I should have no problem with either their
external or their internal ISA modems, but that I needed to avoid
the PCI modem for linux work. The PCI modem doesn't allow
disabling PnP, and it's a winmodem.

Hayes told me that I wouldn't have any problem with their
internal modem with linux, but I later decided not to buy it
after reading a mediocre review.

Steve,
I'm currently trying to get my Trident 3dimage 9750 card to run linux.
Here's a web page that describes how one gal got it working. Sorry to say,
I can't get linux to run in text mode, let only X. So, hope it's helpful.

I have been looking at the Asus P2B-D and saving my pennies for some time. It
certainly looks like a good board.

Since I am bent on running dual-celeries, the recent price reduction by Intel
on 300A's has me ready to risk butchering a CPU or two to get this working.
Obviously, I want these puppies running outside the Intel recommended clock
rate and bump them up to 450MHz.

The only thing I could not see in the Asus manual is how do you select the
core voltage. The manual makes mention of voltage selection and that it is
not necessary and that overclocking your CPU can result in a slower system
(I'd like to see that!). From the Celery overclocking survey, people appear
to be running Asus P2B (not dual) at between 2.0 and 2.2 volts. I'm assuming
that the Asus P2B-D can select these voltages as well.

Can you select the core voltage on the P2B-D?

How do you select the voltage? Jumpers?

What range of voltages are there? What granularity?

Thanks,
Thomas...

I like FIC better but I heard Iwill is nice as well.
amd k6-2, nice fast cheap non-intel cpu :)
SCSII: !!!Adaptec 1542!!! big mistake, if you want a high performance
scscii controller with great drivers get Mylex (aka Buslogic); 948/958.
Matrox's are nice, I have Millenium II 8mb and it's one of the Fastest
cards supported by XFree, also the image quality is exceptional.
I also have SMC EtherEZ 8416, nice card for an isa but not a Killer.
Get something with DEC Tulip chipset, like SMC EtherPower I.

If you trully want a KILLER "tis ain't it" :) but still it's one
of a nicest setups for that kinda money.

Wait for K6-3 500, use Mylex bt-958, and a busmastering Eth0 and you'll
be MUCH closer to "Killer-ness" :)

BTW: I run a setup very similar to the one you mentioned and its
great, fast, cheap, and most importantly very reliable. If you do
not overclock and your memory is from a good source you will NOT
have any problems.

If the "soft power button" doesn't create an event Linux can get a hold of,
there's nothing Linux can do. Can you set it in your BIOS to make the power
switch become a "suspend" switch? If so, then you can use that with the
"apmd" utility to get a sucessful shutdown.

I got an 9-to25 pin adapter that I assumed standard!
Thus I merely used the adapter in order to use ttyS1
instead of ttyS0 (I didn't think there was anything else to do).
But it doesn't work! Maybe those adapters are not standard
and the pin configuration is all wrong !!? Is it possible?

Thanks

Subject: Re: Create Bootable disk with LS-120 drive?
Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 15:41:01 GMT

Yes, I can do this. And I can get RH "installed" onto my system.
However, and here's where the problem is. I cannot get a
bootable system floppy created. So, I have a 1 GB partition
on my second SCSI drive (sdb3), but I have no way to
connect to it.
Here's what I've tried, and what went wrong:

I have an older LILO disk with 2.0.30 kernel on it, but this kernel
does not support LS120, so once I get booted, I cannot mount any
floppies, in order to upgrade the kernel.

I tried to put loadlin.exe and vmlinuz on a MSDOS bootable floppy,
and booting this. However, this does not have any SCSI mods,
so it doesn't find my Buslogic BT946C, and therefore panics since
it can't find my root partition (loadlin vmlinuz root=/dev/sdb3).

Did a rawrite of initrd.img to a floppy, but I'm not sure how to get
a kernel on this floppy, since I can't see it in dos anymore, rawrite
will overwrite it, and I can't mount the floppy with my 2.0.30 kernel.

If anyone has anymore hints and/or helps, I would appreciate them.
I apparently have a fully functioning LINUX RH5.2 distribution on
my PC, but I can't access it. I need to use a boot floppy option, since
my wife uses my system also, and I can't really take the chance of
breaking something so she can't use it.

Some more info, in case anyone is interested, or this helps in a
solution:
Buslogic BT-946C
    Seagate ST32430N (2.0GB SCSI - 0)
        900MB - Win95 FAT16 Primary Part
        1.05GB - Win98 FAT32 Primary Part
200MB - Extended part hiding some bad sectors
(yeah, I know. I'm in the market to get a new HD to
                         replace this one soonly).
5MB - Partition Magic Boot Manager
    Seagate ST15320WC (4.3GB SCSI - 1)
         1.0GB - FAT16 General data directory
         2.0GB - Unused for now
         100MB - Linux Native Swap
         1.0GB - Linux Native FS
    Connor CPF1060S (1.0GB SCSI - 2)
          1.0GB FAT16 Primary Part - General Storage,
                      shared binary directory for Win95/Win98
    HiVal 12X CDROM (SCSI - 4)
    Connor CTM3200S (SCSI - 6) - Tape mini-cart backup unit

I have tried loading LILO to my Linux Part (/dev/sdb3), but I guess
it's beyond the 1024 limit, and it barfs. Can I put a LILO and/or
/boot partition somewhere on one of my disks so that Partition
Magic's Boot manager can see it?

Try disconnecting the modem and see if the problem goes away. If it
does, then we can be sure the modem is the culprit, and my guess is
the modem is using system resources that may conflict with whatever
Linux is trying to use. Of course I have no clue how an external
device can cause such a conflict. Try moving the modem to a different
COM port.

Also, with PnP modem, the usual advice is to turn off PnP support.

Good luck!

i'd like to get sound on my sharp laptop which apparently has built in
sound... unfortunatly i have no idea how to figure out what it is... the
machine came with a 5x86 processor(that's cyrix isn't it?), 8 mb of ram
and about a 600 mb hard drive... anyone have any idea what sort of sound
chips it's got?
