Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer.... Works fine with StarOffice5.0. Works fine with
Netscape4.x. Works fine with Filerunner. It does not require any tweaks
to work with SO but for the other stuff and xterms look at:
http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/

That site has all teh skinny on Linux and wheeled rodents.

I would like to configure my Linux for audio device CMI8330.
This is an audio on board on Asus P5a/b 100MHz mainboard.
It is soundblaster 16 compatible, but setup program on linux
doesn't consent me to configure it.
I'd like some help on finding this audio driver or some other kind of

Thanks. Luca

Tried all day to get the IBM Auto 16/4 ISA up and running with 2.2.1. I am
giving up.
It ran just fine under 2.0.36. No problems there.

The messages that come up are the following:
modprobe and insmod answer: ...ibmtr.o: init_module: Device or ressource busy
syslog says: ibmtr: register_trdev() returned non-zero
The pretty little LED's on the adapters back plate are blinking all the time.

Pls help as this machine is being setup for a *very* big bank, and I am trying
to raise the tux banner in here.

Pls respond per Email *also*, as my usenet access is rather limited.

Ummm...probably the simplest suggestion would be to check to see if the
CDROM drive letter has changed. If you already had the second hard drive
in the system and simply repartitioned/reformated it as a Linux drive,
then Windows would no longer recognize it as a valid drive. In you case,
the CDROM drive might have been changed from E: to D: (or something
along those lines)... I assume you've already checked this and so the
above suggestion is worhtless...;-)

I'm a Linux newbie. I'm trying to install it on a new hard drive that is
connected through a parallel port on a notebook using a Shuttle epat
protocol driver. Is there a way to get Red Hat 5.2 to recognize this drive
for the installation, or is there any distribution that will see the drive
and allow me to install there? I expect to boot from a floppy when
everything is up and running.

Thanks for your help.

Subject: I need specific PCI Modem usage info.
Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1999 15:02:08 -0500

I've read a lot of the others posts, and parts of HOWTOs about using a
PCI modem under Linux and I still can't seem to make sense of it. I have
played around with setserial, testing things with minicom with no avial.
It all seems way to vague -- Am I supposed to set the IRQ of the COM
port to the IRQ of the modem or vice versa and what about the Memory
address? Regaurdless here is information about my system, please help
me:

The modem that I bought is an Internal IDEMA PCI FaxModem (Is this a
no-name brand or what?).

excerpt from /proc/pci:

Bus 0, device 13, function 0:
Communication controller: Cirrus Logic Unknown device (rev 1).
      Vendor id=1013. Device id=4000.
      Medium devsel. IRQ 10.
      Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xe2000000.
      I/O at 0x6000.

setserial reports this:

/dev/cua0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
/dev/cua1, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x02f8, IRQ: 3
/dev/cua2, UART: unknown, Port: 0x03e8, IRQ: 4
/dev/cua3, UART: unknown, Port: 0x02e8, IRQ: 3

I made sure to ask the vendor if it was a Winmodem or not, and they told
me that it wasn't. Was I lied to? I figured that they must have some
idea what they were talking about given that they were selling FreeBSD
there. Please at lease mirror all responses to my email address --

Date: Tue, 09 Feb 1999 14:59:51 GMT

Hi everyone. What's the story with running Redhat5.2 with a 2940UW adapter?
The system worked perfectly under 5.1, but upon completely reinstalling the
OS, I get errors like this at random times:

Feb 8 13:13:37 wwwscas kernel: scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid
1636, scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Write (10) 00 00 53 b0 42 00 00 02 00
Feb 8 13:13:39 wwwscas kernel: SCSI host 0 abort (pid 1636) timed out -
resetting
Feb 8 13:13:39 wwwscas kernel: SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
Feb 8 13:13:40 wwwscas kernel: (scsi0:0:0:0) Synchronous at 40.0 Mbyte/sec,
offset 8.

I suspect this might be a particularly horrible situation if my system resided
on the scsi chain, but it doesn't - it's on an IDE. Anyway, I've heard rumors
that acquiring and building version 2.2.1 of the kernel will solve this
problem. Is that truly the case? Any experiences with this problem?

Thanks very much,

You might want to look into a high speed serial card
if you want to get the most out of your 128K connection.
There are several available, see the serial HOWTO.

Same combination here - and it works very reliably for me. I've been
running this configuration since late October and it's been
essentially trouble-free.

I did decide to spring for PC-100 SDRAM DIMMs from a "first tier"
vendor (Micron). I'd heard that some of the second- and third-tier
memory out there in the marketplace can be of marginal reliability,
and I've had enough difficulties with slightly-flaky memory in the
past that I decided to spend the extra few dollars on a name-brand type.

Whether for this reason, or because I'm just lucky otherwise, the
system has been solid. The only trouble I had during initial startup
was some system lockups while installing... this turned out to be due
to the Mylex FlashPoint BT SCSI controller I was using (either
defective, or incompatible with the ASUS motherboard or its chipset).
Mylex was kind enough to swap this controller for one of their
"MultiMaster" models at no charge, and the new controller fixed the
problem.

I think this is caused by the autoconfig mechanism in the network card that
tries to detect whether it is connected to a 100 Mbit or a 10Mbit network. The
problem might go away if you use a hub, but you can also try to fix the nic to
100 Mbit. Sometimes this can be done with a dos-based setup program that comes
with the card.

My second machine runs W98 with a 10/100 Mb nic connected with a cross cable to
a Linux machine with a similar network card. In W98 I can set the card for 100
Mbit only, and after that everything worked ok.

Good luck,

Erwin de Beus

Hi,

I am about to buy a Fujitsu Dynamo 640SE. I contacted Fujitsu to make
sure it will work in linux. They said yes, BUT I can only use up to
the 540MB cart. The 640MB cart. won't work because of a hard 2k
sectoring and SCSI expects 512b sectoring.

If this is true, then I suppose I can write a driver to work around
this feature. I snooped around the scsi drivers but didn't see
anything that was device specific, just for cards. So what
I'm wondering is, will I have to hack the scsi card driver, a
generic driver, or write my own? Any pointers?

Also, do you or know someone who has one of these working in linux?

Thanks!

Got a 3Com 3c509b on a VX98 motherboard. All I get when I boot up is the
'eth2 initalization delayed'. (eth0 is the 3c905 and eth1 is 3c900 and
they work fine). Here's what I've done to try to get the 3c509b (ISA)
card working:

1. with 3c5x9cfg.exe I've disabled pnp and assigned irq/io so it won't
conflict.
2. turned of pnp os on the mboard.
3. run pnpdump, doesn't find the card (so isapnp would be worthless).
4. recompiled the kernel to include support for this card.
5. used kerneld to add the card at the correct irq/io.

and still I get the same error! The card worked under NT, so I know that
isn't the problem. Since I don't have any PCI slots left I can't just
plug in another PCI card.

Help!

Trouble Starting X with correct resolution POST2

I am very new to Linux so please bear with my ignorance and newbie
questions. The Redhat 5.1 installation from Que seemed clean and
straightforward. I gave up on the installation automatically selecting my
actual components (as I get a locked black screen):
Actual Components:
PS2 (MS IntelliMouse)
DEC Compatible NIC
Optiquest V95 monitor
STB Velocity 128

Question: Is the black screen considered a virtual terminal?

Several from the newsgroups suggested that I use xf86config to set up X so I
did.
? If I go through and pick all generic devices, X will start but at a
unbearable 320 x 320 resolution.
? If I go through and pick 800x600 and the STB Velocity etc… I still get
the unbearable resolution
? Sometimes if I pick some various combinations of resolution and Video , x
will lock. When I say pick various combinations, they are combinations of
generic drivers and settings that the monitor can actually handle.

Question: Is there a quick and easy Windoze way of changing resolution in
X?

I have listened to your suggestions on (CTRL)+(alt)+(+/- on the keypad) but
I get no response, both when the screen remains black as well as when I am
in the unbearable 320x320 resolution.

When I exit x I see a bunch of notes on the screen regarding the setup and
(**) with the selections that were made. Showing that 8 bit color depth,
320x320 has been selected etc….
1.) Where can I edit manually?
2.) How Can I see previous page upon exiting X? (page up command?)
3.) Could it be a keyboard problem? I am picking a standard 101 keyboard
in the xf86config setup. The Keyboard is a ps2 NMB????
4.) Could cards in the PC not recognized screw around with the setup.
Example sound Card, Cable Modem card, and the modem?

Thank you for your time
Quinn
