Hi,
I just wondering if anyone knows whether the Xircom's RealPort CardBus
Ethernet 10/100+Modem 56
(http://www.xircom.com/products/realport/realport-rbem56g100.html) is
supported by RH Linux 6.0?

I was thinking of getting it since they are having a promotion. Please
feedback any advice/suggestions. Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Subject: HELP:Upgrading to RedHat 6.0 "fouled" up my system
Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 09:55:40 -0700

Hi,

I just purchased the the RedHat 6.0 core system upgrade. Unfortunately,
it did not come with a boot floppy. That seems pretty lame, since in the
installation manual it says that if I am running an Intel based system,
which I am, then I will need to use a boot floppy. Well, I had a boot
floppy from my previous install of RedHat 5.0, so I though that I would
"get lucky". BIG mistake. I got through most of the install but it died
at the point where it has to install the boot loader. I can still boot
up but none of the Xwindows functions work, I suspect because the video
drivers were improperly set.

Does anyone know whewre I can get a boot floppy for RedHat 6.0 and try
this whole thing again?

Thanks
Tom

Take a look at http://www.xfree86.org/cardlist.html
Search your card get the server and install it.
If your card isn't in there then do a search at a search engine on "STB
Velocity 4400" and linux and driver

You can't secure a computer against someone who has physical access to
it. Any mechanical lock can be broken with the right tool (bolt cutter)
and then the machine can be taken away and compromised at leisure.

What you can do is make it inconvenient for someone to casually compromise
it. This is what is generally done with Unix boxes in office environments.
Specifically this means

  - don't allow it to boot from removable media without a password
  - don't allow it to be booted into single user mode (or any other
insecure mode, e.g. alternate OS on a dual-boot setup) without
    a password.

With a PC you can generally set up the BIOS and LILO that way. Your only
way back in, should you forget the password, is to open the box and short
the little jumper that makes it clear all its BIOS settings. And the cable
locks that are used to discourage computers being taken away generally also
inhibit access to the interior. Which brings you back to the guy with the
bolt cutter.

If I wanted to compromise a RedHat 5.2 system that has been secured in
this fashion, what I would do is: Wait until it's accessing the disk a
lot. Unplug it. Plug back in, watch it go through fsck on bootup and hope
it gets messed up enough to dump me into a single-user shell to continue
manually. My box did that once after a trip-over-the-power-cord event.

Hello Arthur,

The OKIPAGE 4w uses a proprietary driver for the parallel port, to
speed up data transfer. I suspect the Linux driver doesn't do
this, 'cause I don't think we ever released details of it. However, if
you send data too fast, the printer becomes swamped with data, and you
get the symptom you describe. So, your problem is either data is too
fast, or too slow. If you can change the BIOS settings for your PC to
choose a different LPT mode (e.g. EPP, 'compatible', 'Bi-directional'
etc.) you may get it to work OK.

Hope that helps,
Alan

During my linux install, my video card was not recognised (STB Velocity
4400)

I selected SVGA instead, and matched the monitor. I then selected 800 x 600
8 bit coulour. However, the install couldnt determine the amount of RAM. I
selected 8Mb (its actually 16Mb). When i typed startx, I got the message
that i didnt have enough video ram to start it.

Im really lost and confused here, as I have been using linux for, oh, about
10 minutes, and all I could do was stare at a command prompt!!

I guess I want to know what I should be setting my card to, if there are
drivers or whatever available, and how I install them from the prompt!!

Tom,

Using an ftp client (or, gag, a web browser) go to ftp.cdrom.com, then
from the pub/linux/RedHat/linux/redhat/redhat-6.0/i386/dosutils,
download the file rawrite.exe

Then, from the pub/linux/RedHat/linux/redhat/redhat-6.0/i386/images
directory, download boot.img. Put a formatted diskette in your a
drive, and run rawrite. Tell it the location on your hd of boot.img,
then the location of your diskette (it should ask you that) and it
should then write the boot disk for you.

HTH!

Yep. Look at /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes:

As of 2.1.33, parallel port support can now by handled by the parport
driver. Be aware that with Plug-and-Play support turned on, your
parallel port may no longer be where you expect it; for example, LPT1
(under DOS) was sometimes /dev/lp1 in Linux, but will probably be
/dev/lp0 with the new Plug-and-Play driver. If printing breaks with
the new driver, try checking your lpd configuration. A good source of
more information is the Documentation/parport.txt file included with
    the kernel.

The speed of multitasking several programs will depend greatly on how
much memory you have loaded, (up to a point) you are probably far
better of buying more memory than a faster processor if you want a
more "snappy" system. You could even load all your frequently used
programs into a RAMdisk at boot if you have a lot of memory to spare,
this should make program launching almost instant.

do you have a boot disk for linux?

fdisk /mbr
boot from linux boot disk
run lilo (after messing with lilo.conf to show NT, that is)

If you have a boot disk, you have no problems. If you don't, you now have to
re-install linux.

It's been a long time. But USR did make some external Winmodems, back
in the late 14.4 / early 28.8 days (1995?). My former employer bought
one by mistake, instead of the real external Sportster 14.4 that we
had asked for. Needless to say, the piece of junk didn't work on a
terminal server hanging off a SCO box.

All the external v.90 modems I've seen have been real modems. I agree
that if at all in doubt, buy external.

Bad analogy. Turbocharged cars require more maintenance (change
oil every 2500-3000 miles, use synthetic oil, allow cooldown before
turning off ignition), use more gasoline, and still tend to break
down more often than normally aspirated cars. Especially when you
crank the boost beyond what the factory intended. TANSSAAFL.

>P100 o/c to 133Mhz

>336A o/c to 550Mhz

OTOH, I've had a P90 that exhibited subtle memory problems when
overclocked to 100 MHz (went back to 90), a P55C-166 that locked
up once a week under heavy load at 208 (went back to 188), and a
P2-333 that got a wee bit twitchy at 450 (went back to 412).
Overclocking without thinking is a great way to get an unstable
system.

Overclocking is easy, now that it just involves moving a jumper
or changing a BIOS setting, rather than installing a new clock
oscillator. Guaranteeing that the overclocked system is just as
stable as it was at the spec speed is very hard. (You can't
prove a negative; making it through a game of Quake and some
kernel compiles is an indication of stability, but not proof.)
Understating the risks to people who aren't comfortable with
overclocking is irresponsible.

The proplem with this card is that Diamond doesn't releases their spec's
I have my dimond speedstar A50 8Mb about 4 month's now and i wrote to
Diamond, i've posted a lot of messages in several NG's but no respons.
I also had to manualy adjust my XF86Config with the options :
- no_bitblt
- no_accel
- sw_cursor

Now i can run X but when theirs something that uses alot of CPU (like
RC5) x crashes +- every time i swap between a console and X.
There is another option : there are company's who write X-servers but
they sell them. And one of them has wrote a server for the SIS6326
chipset. So if you are willing to keep your card then that is at this
moment the ony option that gives you full use of teh capacity of your
card.
Or you have to wait until the XFree86-4.0 comes out but i'vgfe reaed
somewere tis wont be until the end of the year.
I'm not willing to wait until the end of the year so yesterday I orderd
another card that sertainly will be supported by Linux : Matrow
Millenium G400 16 MB

I hope diamond will lose alot of customers if they keep up their effort
in NOT releasing their specs.

Then assuming they have the right major and minor (2,0 for fd0 and 27,0
for rft0, which is what ftape usually points at), it's probably that you
built a kernel lacking support for floppy devices.

Look at /proc/devices. If you don't see fd as major 2 under block
devices, that's your problem.
