I have asked many people whether it is possible to get a U.S. Robotics
winmodem to work under linux, and have pretty much gotten a mixed response.
I have heard from some people who know people who have actually made a
winmodem work. So my final questions are these:
Is it possible to get a winmodem to work?
and if so, has anyone every done it?
Thank you very much!

Pizano,
There are several threads in this section dealing with this problem.
Alternately, you can go to www.creaf.com or www.creative.com and get their
linux banshee drivers. They are really easy to install. As far as
Xservers it works with, I'm not sure. I guess I'm running
gnome/enlightenment.

I recently installed RH 6.0 on my 505tx, and everything seems to be
working fine except for the sound. I followed the suggestion on the linux
for laptops site to use sndconfig and choose sb16. The sample sounds in
sndconfig play properly, but when I try to play any kind of a sound with
this configuration, it plays at to high a frequency (the same thing
happens with any configuration I've tried, provided the sound works at
all).

I've yet to try any of the other solutions provided on this site, I'm just
wondering if anyone else is familiar with this problem.

Thanks

Its not Zoltrix but Zilog and nope, the logic board is made by Logitech but some
of the M-S48 uses Zilog controller rather than Logitech controller. I've friend

logic board with him. Now, my mouse can scroll on Linux too.. yeah! Openup your
mouse and see if it has Zilog or Logitech controller. I've no success in getting
the Zilog to work.

I know exactly where you are coming from. My current primary
computer is a old 40mHz compaq laptop, 8.5" 8bpp LCD, 340 HDD,
20MB ram. I obtained this machine for a mere 200.00 from an
auction last year. I run debian (kernel 2.0.36). Yes, even X
works beautiful in 640x480. While this may seem totally useless
to some people, I am only using it for lightweight programming /
development. It is *perfect* for this function. If I need to
compile anything hefty I just use the sparcs at school.

Here's the good part. I too, have just (f'ing finally) acquired
extra-tuitional money to invest in a new box. I'm thinking of
going the Celeron 366/Abit BP6 SMP route, but there's been a lot
of speculation as to whether or not Intel disabled SMP on the
latest batch of Celerys. But hell, if not... in a week or so
I'll be parallel processing ALL OVER THE PLACE.

Anyway, the point of all this blabber is that, despite my future
purchase of a new kick-ass box, I *love* my crappy 'ol 40mHz.
I've done most of my coding out of the house, which I prefer.
Because Linux runs so damn well on old hardware, and the GNU
tools are egg-cellent for development, you can't go wrong. Just
be careful buying used laptops.. and make *sure* you check out
linux-on-laptops web site (don't have the URL on me, just do a
search.) before you buy one...

Good luck!

I have been having this exact same problem, but it went away completely
when I removed the ATI XPERT 98 AGP card and put in an el cheapo S3 card
(pci). I returned the ATI card as defective, but the replacement card
exhibits the same behavior - random lockups.

Can anyone give me an indication if the ATI Xpert 98 should work OK? The
linux HW database at comphardware indicates support, but the XFree86
3.3.3.1 release notes indicate that the pci xpert 98 is supported, but does
not mention agp. The redhat compatibility table mentions the xpert98 but
says nothing regarding agp/pci.

Are there any special considerations for using this card?

Hi! I'm currently running a Banshee 16mb AGP (creative) and Redhat 6.0
with the Gnome/Enlightenment windowing package. I have quake2 installed,
and I've gotten the x server and setup files from glide.xxedgexx.com. I
have the 3d drivers that are in the banshee page. I've even downloaded Mesa
2.6-x and I still can't get 3d rendering support in quake2. I can run in
software or software X11. If I go to Mesa GL I get a segmentation fault.
Running 3dfx Miniport (minigl?? I can't remember exactly) or any of the
other options just default back to software mode. What am I missing here?

Any thoughts or suggestions?

First of all, I am not spamming. what I am writing to tell
some of the others on this new group is... If you are looking for a
good quality inexpensive 4 port serial port that shares interrupts as
well as has the ability to set the onbourd timer to run your 16550An
serial ports to 480kbps on an isa bus, this card will do it. it
supports IRQs 3,4,5,9,10,11,12,15 you can even set each port on its
own irq if you want.
When I got the card today I almost lost my cookies. Golly Gee!
a REAL honest to god manual! Yes its small but the card has more
options that I can even think of. (hint, if you are gutzy. you could
probally have 4 or more of em in one machine! one to act as the normal
com1-com4, and YES the interupts for Com 1,3 and 2,4 DO work like they
should. then a second card for Com-5-8, a third card for addresses
0x100-0x11F and possibly two more if you can spare the slots! I am
going to order two more ;)
First time I got it. I thought it was AST fourport compatible,
turns out that it is a boca BB-1004/USENET II compatible card. It
supports all standard handshaking in addition to a IRQ status
register. For $50 from Dalco Electronics. this card really makes it
easy for me to plug in lots of terminals here.
In addition you can Map the ports to the 4 serial ports any
way you desire.
If you are interested in Aquiring this beauty. you should be
able to order it from Dalco Electronics's web site of
http://www.dalco.com item number is 61505. They were backordered and I
had to wait 1 month for mine. Aparently because of Linux they cannot
keep enough in stock! ;)
If you rather call and order it. the catalog phone number is
1-800-445-5342

P.S if anyone has any objections to this summary. please do feel free
to contact me. If you would like more info on how well this card
actually works. email me too.

Of course, if you wait, apparently XFree86 3.3.4 will have officially
supported Voodoo chipset servers -- based on the ones you can get above.

Note that "supported" means 2D only. You will still have to hack if you
want to use the 3D stuff on the card.

Hi,
My voodoo3 2000 works great with SUSE and SAX.
try www.3dhtml.com for the GLIDE drivers.

I got a good beta driver here that I actually used
3DfxRPMS_vb_glibc.html
This is the name of the file I used
XFree86_3DFX-SVGA-3_3_3-5_i386.rpm

I think this file makes a 3dfx / SVGA workaround, or something.
Works just fine!

Well, the GOTCHA has gotcha, I'm afraid. You're probably not going to
be able to use SANE for that; SANE is primarily for SCSI devices. There
are a couple of drivers for some parallel port scanners but, on the
whole, parallel port devices aren't supported.

This is not inherently due to any bias against parallel port devices,
rather it reflects the lack of willingness of manufacturers to
release the relevant specifications for the SANE group to write the
drivers. If you were to contact the manufacturer of the AI GOTCHA
and request the device programming specifications, you might be able
to get the SANE development group to write a SANE driver for it.
However, many manufacturers will require the signing of a
Non-Disclosure Agreement before releasing the specs; this is
anti-thetical to a GPL project and would probably prevent drivers
from being written.

>Any help would be appreciated.

Check http://www.mostang.com/sane for the canonical word on the subject.

In general, SCSI devices are the best way to go for purchasing peripherals
under Linux. Given that you've already purchased a parallel port camera, I
suppose that doesn't really help you right now. If you can sell it and get
a SCSI camera instead (check the SANE website to make sure the particular
device is supported first), you'll be able to do what you want.

SCSI cards are fairly cheap now, for instance http://www.centrix-intl.com
has a Symbios 875 card for US$65. I have a similar card (Asus SC875) and it
works perfectly under Linux. The 875 cards are Ultra-Wide SCSI, BTW.

It's just my personal opinion but the only thing that should be attached
to a parallel port is a printer. In the relatively near future
(i.e. within a year, I expect) you'll be able to use USB devices
with Linux.

Cheers,
Rob

> Seagate's Backup Exec?

I've not used Backup Exec but do use BRU2000PE. BRU *seems* to
be a robust, completely featured backup utility and I've not
experienced any problems with it. But I've not had to recover from a
tape yet. <knock on wooden head>

There is a TCL/Tk X front end for BRU. While it's no Flash Harry as
one might get with a Windows program, it does provide all the basic
functionality you might want for archiving (full, incremental,
differential), restoring, scheduling, logging, multiple volumes,
verification (both checksum and byte comparison), compression,
protection, etc.) The PE version doesn't allow for redirection on
restore though. Check EST's web site (http://www.estinc.com) for
complete details.

I didn't purchase BRU as a licensed copy of version 15 was included
with the Official Red Hat 5.0 distribution I purchased. This normally
sells for US$89 but comes with no support from EST. Version 15 is still
the current version so may be worthwhile picking up a used copy of RH
5.0 or 5.1 to get a licensed copy of BRU2000PE. I don't think Red
Hat included it in RH 5.2, though.

BTW, my tape drive is a Connor CTMS-3200, takes QIC-Wide 3080
format tapes. The kernel SCSI driver identified it as /dev/st0 and BRU
found it/operates it without any further fuss.

Cheers,
Rob
