My 486DX4100 is fast enough. Going from 16 to 24Meg of RAM made a big
difference. Increasing to 32Meg virtually eliminated the swapping that
running X-window would cause. The only place where I really notice a big
difference between the 486 and the 233Meg Pentiums (with 128Meg of RAM) is
when doing a kernel compile--otherwise it doesn't have too much of a problem
keeping up.

One more thing to check is the number of wait states you have set. If that is
set higher than necessary it will likely slow things down quite a bit

This can happen if there's trouble with the SCSI connection. Make sure that
you've terminated the cable at both ends and not in the middle anywhere.
Try a different cable if you have one. See if parity checking is consistent
between the drive and the bus, etc. etc. I'd double check the connection
side of things before suspecting the tape drive or drivers.

Well pretty much any modem which is external will work with Linux.

I have/use a USRobotics Sportster 33.6 which as been really great! I could
upgrade via a flash to 56K if I wanted (and paid the price) but I can not
connect much faster then that right now from my current ISP so I have not
worried about it.

The Creative drivers are the only ones that work with the
soundcard, so your stuck with them. I have not had too much
trouble with them myself. What is your hardware setup?
Mainly the motherboard chipset, if your IDE drivers are not
setup to use DMA you can get a lot of problems, if you have
a non-intel chipset you will most likely have to recompile
your kernel and add the experimental chipset drivers.

I have the same problem for Yamaha DS-XG on board chip. So far there is
no linux driver support this chip except you use OSS/Linux which can be
found in <A HREF="http://www.opensound.com">http://www.opensound.com</A> but you have
to pay $20.00 (basic driver)+$10.00
(Yamaha chip) for it. Well, with $30.00, you can buy another sound card
with linux support if you want to play WAV or midi sound in linux.
<p>On the other hand, if you only need play CD music and if you boot linux
from DOS, you can load DOS sound card driver before running loadlin. I
have no idea about you modem. If you can identify it is winmodem, then
currently there is no linux support for this kind of modem.

Check out the CD-Burning HOWTO at the LInux Documentation Project for
the best information.
Basically you have to convince your computer that the IDE device is
actually a SCSI device through SCSI emulation.

RW support is limited if it all. You will have much more success with
CD-R's though.

Try www.sharethenet.com,
www.linuxsupportline.com/~router/freesco/freesco.htm, or
www.linuxrouter.org. They are all single floppy linux routers. Share the net
is the most polished, but costs money, freesco looks great for us hacks just
trying to make something work, but its still in early beta, and the Linux
Router Project is probably the most impressive, but very tough to setup for
a beginner.

I dug up some old code I used for a similar purpose. It consists of
- a kernel patch which produces a new device, /dev/vfemem (it was a vfe
  bus adapter I used.)
- a part of a program which opens this device.

My guess is that also a character device has to be made, with a command
like
mknod /dev/vfemem c 1 8
Assuming proper mode of this file (chmod 666 /dev/vfemem), the device
can be controlled from any user program.

Disclaimers:
I, and TNO will not be responsible for any errors in this code.
Note that I have not used this code for the last three years!

The kernel patch (against a old kernel -- I suspect 1.2.X):

Check the groups file, perhaps something wrong there ?
You should be able to make another user with root privilege, maybe you could
try that.

It might help if you post the passwd-line of root, and the groups-file with

and I have a 9.1GB IBM and a 2.1GB Segate and I haven't experianced any
problems. I do know that you don't keed the 1GB> support toggled, that's
a pre DOS 5 thing.
