This is interesting: I went for an alternative route, which works very
well although it does require some thought before repartitioning. I used
the MaxBlast software from Maxtor, although it calls itself EZ-BIOS when
it boots up.

1) Install EZ-BIOS onto MBR.

2) Make a small (16 Mb should be plenty unless you do lots of kernel
development) partition first on the disk (it must be the first primary
partition), and make it active. You can mount this as /boot so kernel
images are always below the 1024 cylinder boundary. Install lilo onto
the start of this partition (e.g. /dev/hda1)

Windows can go on the second partition and anything else can go in an
extended partition (more windows partitions, linux partitions, swap,
etc.).

When booting EZ-BIOS is loaded first, then the it boots the first active
primary partition (i.e. lilo)

The only quirks I've noticed are:

1) Windows (95 OEM 1) still doesn't realise the disk is bigger than 8Mb
- well the fdisk on the boot disk sees it the right size, but won't let
me put partitions there.

2) Linux doesn't _need_ EZ-BIOS - it can still see the whole disk anyway
(albeit with possibly different geometry)

I hope this helps,

Tim.

You need to be using XFree86 3.3.4 or get the server from
http://glide.xxedgexx.com/3DfxRPMS_vb_glibc.html for Voodoo Banshee support.

Since the Monster 3D is a 3D only card, I assume you mean the Monster
Fusion. An X server for this card can be found at

I already said it some time ago, but I have to repeat it whenever I am
remembered of this film because I was so disappointed by it:

They made dozens of allusions to Star Wars, but not even one to Star Trek.
And it would have been so nice if the friend of Gracy, the daughter of the
character Bruce Willis played, would have had the name "George", like the
humpback whales in Star Trek IV. But they didn't give him this name. Mean,
isn't it?

It is a via-rhine chipset card, not NE2000

Yes. Use the via-rhine module. Note that under 2.0.36 kernel, it only
works as a module, not compiled into the kernel.

I am trying to get a Linux box using Redhat 5.2 or 6.0

Promise Ultra/33 UDMA IDE controller
it works ifne on 8 drives
and then I put in the SCSI contreoller
tried Symbios SCSI conteroller, shows up as 27xx ncr53c875
when scsi is on the system works fine
when IDE in system works fine
If I set the boot to SCSI and then put both in the system hangs, no msg
        no nothing on boot.

Can someone recommend a combination that will make this work?
Thanks.

Subject: *BAD* experience with SIIG
Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 14:04:06 GMT

Hello all.

I have experienced what is, without doubt, the WORST case of customer
service and negligence from a manufacturer of computer products. That
company is SIIG, maker of expansion cards for PCs.

Let me state now that in the 10+ years I've been using Internet
newsgroups, and in the 18 years I've been using/supporting computers, I
have never felt the need to publicize a bad experience like this.
However, I feel it necessary to warn the general public about this
company so that others don't go through the same experience I have had to
endure.

Here's the story:

Almost 2 months ago, we purchased two SIIG SC-PE4012 Ultra-ATA
controllers so that we could upgrade the hard drives in two of our PCs:
A Dell Dimension XPS P90, and a Gateway P5-90. Both machines have the
latest version of their BIOS.

After following the directions for installation of the product, I
encountered similar problems with both machines. Specifically:

1) After entering the partition information using FDISK, that
information would disappear after rebooting the computer.

2) When trying to flash the card's BIOS, the system would freeze.

3) When making any changes inside the card's BIOS, the system would
freeze.

I firt wrote an E-mail to SIIG's customer support. After waiting a few
days, I received an E-mail from Mike Mendoza from SIIG, and was told to
flash the BIOS on the card (which, if he had read my initial
message, had been tried and wasn't working). After searching the
Internet, I found other people who had the exact same problem with this
card. Upon the recommendation of one person, I installed both cards into
a 3rd machine (a no-name clone), and was able to flash the BIOS of each
card.

However, upon reinstalling the cards into the Dell & Gateway, I could
format the drives, but making changes in the BIOS would still cause a
system freeze, and attempting to do anything with the card in Windows
95 (install drivers, check properties, etc.) would cause a system crash.
After reading some half finished documentation sent by Mr. Mendoza, I
determined that there is a conflict between the BIOS on the card, and the
BIOS on the motherboard, and there apparently isn't any solution to that.
Such a thing was SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED in that half finished
documentation. I have supported PCs for 10 years now, and have a plenty
of experience in resolving compatibility issues. The problem definitely
lies in the expansion card itself.

I inquired with Mr. Mendoza about returning these cards in exchange
for two cards of a different model. I specifically stated that I
didn't care if they were ISA or PCI cards, or if the replacement
would result in slower hard drive speeds. I just need something that
allows each machine to use the new 10GB hard drives properly. He
told me that SIIG does not perform such exchanges, and that I
have to return the cards to my reseller.

The reseller only exchanges "defective" products for same-item
replacement. Besides, at this point, I had spent over 30 days
troubleshooting this problem, and could not return the product anyway.

Frustrated, I called SIIG's Customer Service Department (a toll call),
and was told the same thing: the company would not exchange the cards.
I explained the situation, and that these machines are NAME BRAND
systems, and was then told that the company "does not guaranty
compatibility". I asked for the representatives' supervisor, and was
given a phone number for "Laurie": 510-657-8688, x5315. Upon calling
this number many times, the person on the other end insisted that I
wasn't talking to SIIG. I don't know if there's a problem with the
phone company's switches, or if the person who picked up was an SIIG
employee who didn't want to talk to anybody.

Nowhere in the warranty statement that accompanied these cards does
it state that the company doesn't guaranty compatibility. The
warranty does state that:

"The Company warrants to the original buyer of this product that the
hardware is free of defects in materials and workmanship for a period
of five years from the date of purchase from a reseller or dealer.
Should this product fail to be in good working order during the
warranty period, the Company, at its sole option, will repair or
replace the defective product with an identical product or product
having similar features and functionality as determined by the
Company"

With that being said, I e-mailed their sales department, told them the
situation to date, and claimed that the cards have defects in
workmanship (due to the BIOS being improperly programmed), and that I
am entitled to replacements under the terms of the warranty.

The person who replied to the e-mail, Kris Chen, said that she'd have Mr.
Mendoza call me regarding this problem. In my e-mail to them, I stated
that I was on the East Coast (they are in California), and what my phone
number was. A few days later, I arrive at work to find that Mr. Mendoza
left a voice mail message well after 6pm. I tried calling him twice that
day (more toll calls), but his mailbox was full, and I could not leave a
message. I e-mailed him with this info, and asked him to call me between
9-5pm eastern time. A few days later, I again arrive at work to find a
message from him, left after 6pm.

I once again e-mailed the sales department, giving them an ultimatum: if
they don't contact me by 5pm on Monday, August 9th, I will take what
action is necessary to get a resolution to this problem. I also stated
that I no longer wanted to deal with Mr. Mendoza, as he apparently has no
legitimate desire to even attempt to resolve my problem. I get an e-mail
back from Kris Chen, telling me that she'll print out my e-mail and
deliver it personally to Mr. Mendoza. Sigh.

5pm came and went on Monday, and I received no e-mails or phone calls
from SIIG.

The only conclusion I can come to is that SIIG sells products of
questionable design, and refuses to provide any kind of customer support
for them. It appears that they go out of their way to avoid dealing with
customers experiencing problems, and will not honor their stated
warranty.

I urge anybody considering the purchase of an expansion card for their PC
to avoid SIIG.

I also plan to contact the Better Business Bureau and the California
Attorney General's office regarding this matter, as failure to honor a
product warranty is a crime.

If anybody would care to reply to this, please send me an e-mail.

Thanks for your time,

Chris Freemesser
