HI there

I am a 17gb Maxtor Dimond Max Hard disk with 2 fat32 partitons and one
e2fs partition on it (e2fs is about 4gb)

When I install Red Hat linux on it I find that after a week or so of
use I will switch the system on one day and I get the message
/dev/hda3 containts file system with error - check forced
and I get dumped into shell where I have to run e2fschk manually.
I run the command
e2fsck -y (answer yes to all questions)
that runs for about 20 mins then rebots and everything seems fine

however I always find that one or two things don't work and my
lost+found dirctory has been filled with a huge number of file
(rm * replied "arguemnt list too big")

I reinstall from scratch - reformalltning the partition and the whole
cycle beigns again - using the default kerlel that comes with RH6.0
(2.2.5-15)

Now I want to move this disk into a server machine and I was wondering
if anyone know what caused this problem and how to fix it

I was thinking that I might need a bug fix for large drives?

Thanks in advnce

If you have not changed anything library wise (i.e.: still using
libc5), Check out /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes. The bug in
Realplayer 5.0 is no joke. Try the fix on it, as well. Worked for me,
back at the 2.1.119 stage. Should still work now.

Hi All
I'm currently shopping around for a UPS for our Linux server. (Red Hat
5.2)
I want one that can communicate with The server for automatic shutdown.
Battery life is not as important to me as is price. I just want to have
the server do a clean
shutdown in case of brown and black outs.

APC has models starting at $259 going up to $879 (depending on battery
life
and outlet count). These are the "Smart-UPS" series they come with
shutdown software for
Windoze Boxes. Does anyone know if there are Linux ports of the
software for these devices or
where I might look to find out.?
If not do you know of any other makes or models that might do what I
want.

Thanks
Rusty

Demon publish theirs, or at least its relatively public knowledge now,
because they always used to give that information out.

Yes, no problems! I had to locate the relevant "driver" (not sure what the
correct Linux terminology is!), and I had to use XF86Setup rather than SaX
(SuSE's configuration program).

But yes, its working fine with SuSE 6.0 and KDE 1.1

Hi,

If you have a second machine running M$ Windoze, why not network
the two machines, attatching the printer to the Windoze machine and
print through the network? That is, if you are married to the Epson
printers. I suspect not, but are these printers color laser printers or
ink jets?

If they are inkjets, I'd would check out the HP2000 and HP2500
series printers. I was very impressed with the quality, though I don't
know what is considered "photo quality". Unfortunately, I had to
twist HP's arm to send me a solitary sample. Both of the printers
above use the same printing technology so the quality is the same.
The HP2500 has alot more "bells and whistles", however, and the
capability to print postscipt files, if you want to pay an extra $200
for the postscipt module. You can get the HP2000 for under $500
and the HP2500 for under $900, without the postscipt module. Maybe
most importantly, both of these printers are said to work perfectly
under Linux and ghostscipt - check out the printers HOWTO.

Well as far as I remember the problem is not with the XFree86 team but
with ATI: if programming info was available I'm sure an ATI128 driver

There are actually a large number of differences between the French TV system
(L) and the American system (M).

The French system uses 625 lines, CCIR, positive video modulation, AM mono
sound, NICAM stereo, SECAM colour.

The American system uses 525 lines, EIA, negative video modulation, FM mono
sound, AM stereo subcarrier (sometimes referred to as BTSC), NTSC colour.

You are therefore better off obtaining a TV card in the relevant country.

I've heard that before, but this was somewhat of a mix of CDs my father
gave me with the CD-RW drive. Three Sony CDQ-74BN's, three Sony
CDW-74CN's. I managed to make a good burn on a CDQ-74BN. Know what the
difference in the BN and CN is? I have a new box of 74CN's to try, I
might do that tonight.

I should have mentioned, that I have trouble with a Memorex CD-RW disk
as well! Of course, all the 'great' things I'm hearing about Memorex
makes me wonder if it's any good anyway.

I'm kinda hoping this to be the case, as weird as it might sound.. I
don't plan on keeping Windows around much longer, I haven't used it in
four months.. I just haven't gotten around to transfering some
information, MP3's, etc.. I could use the disk space that hog takes up.

I have two computers at home, a 400MHz PII running Mandrake 6.0 and
(shudder) occasionally Windows 98, and a 400MHz Blue&White G3 Macintosh,
usually running MacOS but occasionally running LinuxPPC or YellowDog
Linux.

I'd like to use a single keyboard and monitor. It's easy to switch the
MONITOR, but switching the KEYBOARD is usually a hassle between a Mac and
a PC.

Except that I have USB on both. The keyboard is a macally USB keyboard,
the house is a Logitech 3-button wheel mouse (also USB); is there such a
thing as a USB switch which will switch between one computer and the
other?

Alternatively, can I run the USB to BOTH computers (perhaps using a hub,
or maybe directly) and software-switch them? (Keyboard input to both
computers simultaneously is likely to be less than useful ;-)

Has anyone else solved this problem? Two monitors and keyboards just take
up too much space. I could get a 21" monitor and have a much more
reasonable use of space.

Please e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], as well as posting a reply.

Thanks!

Subject: Linux on IBM RISC System/6000 F50?!
Date: Wed, 25 Aug 1999 19:25:28 GMT

By way of hand-me-downs, a professor I work for
has acquired an IBM RISC System/6000 F50, or so
the front of the machine says. Also has "PowerPC"
written on the front.
Has anyone ever got Linux installed on such a
beast?

I've installed Linux on three different computers.
All ranging in at: 200-400 MHz K6 or Pentium,
64-128 Megs RAM, 5-10 Gigs HD, Intel Ethernet
cards, Sound Blaster sound cards, and other common
things. Used Red Hat, Caldera, and Debian.

But I've never done it on RISC architecture.
Though I am quite willing to try. The machine has
a keyboard. Find one laying around. But it has no
graphics card. No Operating System currently. No
monitor (the port in the back has the reverse
male/female pins of every monitor/cable set I've
gotten a hold of); might have to go back to the
professor for that one. Hoping to get an ethernet
cable into it soon after I write this. Also, it
does have a floppy and a CDROM drive. Don't know
if it'll boot floppy or CD first, don't yet have a
monitor.

Anyone have ideas on how to attack such a
situation?
I was going to get Red Hat for alpha architecture,
and hopefully a terminal (monitor) for it, and see
what I could do.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

I'm having a really weird time with my JVC XR-W2080 drive. It's listed as
working with CDRecord, and it does... If I use a CDRW. But only partly. If I
then try to verify the CD (using X-CDRoast) it fails after a while... If I
mount the disk, everything appears to be there, and I don't have any
problems with the CD.

I can't get a CDR to burn properly for anything, but the same image will
then burn to a CDRW without problems.

This is the "compiled on my system" binary.

If I run the same command with the "pre-compiled" 1.6, or a "compiled on my
system" 1.8, I get this output:

What type of motherboard is this drive connected to?

I had an EFA motherboard with the i440LX chipset, and continually had
problems with my system not properly flushing the write buffers during
shutdown.

This caused many problems. It was impossible to install Windows 98 (no big
loss, but I had to try to help diagnose this) Windows NT would fail
installation upon the first reboot, it couldn't find the boot files. Linux
would usually install, but sometimes I'd have errors upon reboot, as you
describe.

My fix was to get a new motherboard with the i440BX chipset.
