Anybody got this to work? It comes in my new Dell Inspiron 7000 and in
spite of trying the new 3.3.5-2 server when X starts the gui screen
scrolls upward very quickly, as if the vertical sync wasn't set
correctly. Thanks for any advice, Nelson Hogg

Thanks Rob!

I've now found the gruesome details about all the naff NDA's etc from
Xircom but I don't know what the power requirements are for the AC
adapter. You couldn't enlighten me as to what they are... I've has a poke
around on the circuit board trying to trace tracks etc but I can't even
work out the polarity let alone roughly what the power requirements are!

Thanks

No surprise. The internal modem defaults to some I/O address / IRQ setup
which may cause unpredictable problems with the onboard serial ports,
even if it is a winmodem and can't be used with Linux.

Any number of modems, as long as you do have individual I/O addresses
and IRQs for them (or use a multiport card that shares an IRQ in between
all of them). E.g., my Cyclades card could be used for 8 modems on
just one IRQ (don't use that many modems at this time, though ).

I have a 1520 and my /etc/conf.modules looks like

alias scsi_hostadapter aha152x
options aha152x aha152x=0x340,11

and the card works fine as a module. Note: I'm running RedHat 5.2 whose
bootup scripts look for a line with "scsi_hostadapter" on boot. You'll need
to edit to taste for your distribution.

Subject: AGFA SNAPSCAN 1236s and SANE
Date: Sat, 04 Sep 1999 11:52:52 +0000

I am not able to get my scanner to work....

I have a AGFA Snapscan 1236s and try to use it under MAndrake Linux 6.0
with SANE 1.01-2.

For the scanner I use a SCSI Controller aha1505AV.

First I load the module with:

        modprobe aha152x aha152x=0x140,9,7
        This works fine so far...

Second I execute the program scanimage from SANE with parameter -L

       scanimage -L
and get the following:
device `snapscan:/dev/sge' is a AGFA SNAPSCAN 1236 flatbed scanner

This seems to be ok...

So now I want to scan a Picture:

      scanimage
The scanner led no blinks and on the prompt I get:

P6
# SANE data follows
2540 3422
255

after that nothing else happens and I get no picture.

What am I doing wrong????

Please help

The Matrox G200 is a piece of crap :( I own one.
And maybe it's just that your *monitor* doesn't
support more than 75 Hz.. Just my 2 cents, but I
can get well above 75 Hz with my G200, even
though it is a junk card :)

I've got a Dell latitude CPi 400 with NeoMagic 2160 (128 bit) 2Mb video
memory card.

I've just installed RedHat 6.0 on to it with XFree86 v 3.3.3.1 and I can
not get it to work.

I've tried so many things that I'm not going to list them all. PS I can
get it to work in 640 X 480.

Please... if some one has successfully resolved this please please let
me know what to do.

Make sure your color depth (bpp) isn't too high.
I think you should expect to get at most 16bpp with only 2MB video RAM
and higher resolutions.
I'd try to get it going at 8bpp (256 colors) first, and then up the bpp
after it's working.

Since you're using a laptop, you're using an LCD screen and you don't
have to worry about damaging the screen with an excessive sync rate, so
MAX it out!
In your /etc/X11/XF86Config file set the "HorizSync" and "VertRefresh"
to really wide ranges, something like 20 - 200 for both.

Check your xserver logs. xservers are pretty verbose and will tell you
a lot about what they're doing - which modes they're rejecting and why.
What they've detected, what's been overridden in the config file, etc...
What chipset is it detecting? is it right for your board ?
I think the XF86_SVGA will, if it doesn't recognize your chipset, give
you 320x??? mode only.
Newer chipsets like S3Trio3D and whatever it is that's on the Voodoo3
board need XF86 3.3.4 (which you have to download from www.xfree86.org,
NOT on the redhat mirrors last time I checked.)

I am going to move to Linux, and I also need to buy a non-winmodem 56k modem
(Internal!).
I thought at SupraExpress.
There is an Italian shop which sells via Internet, and sells the
Supraexpress 56i PRO (as they say), but they swear it's not winmodem
"because it's hayes-compatible"
Can any of you expert watch the photo in attachment? I have taken it from
the shop at the tech description at:
http://www.centrohl.it/w3s/H/o7MY_lSyzqPJe5A?H?@217895?80113
(you can see there a technical description (in Italian...) which declares
it's PCI, of course disagreeing with the photo)
You can get a bigger photo at the further link "foto grande": here it is:
http://www.centrohl.it/bin/w3.exe?session.H/o7MY_lSyzqPJe5A?H?@217893?80113

There is a visible Rockwell chipset, which makes me think it's
controller-based... at least the version of the photo...

If you discover that the photo disagrees with the declared name of the modem
(and so we are not sure of which is right), can you tell me if any modem I
will see with such a chipset onboard will surely be controller-based? (I
could go in normal shops and watch the card...)

Thanks in advance for replies!
Gabriele T.
Ps: please cut away " NoSpaM " from my e-address to reply me directly.

Ps2: In the case the links I have given you are "down", I'm sorry about it:
the shop changes the links very frequently, they were OK when I made the
post.
In case they don't work, you may need to reach them from the root of the
shop, if you want, which is in Italian... So do this:
www.centrohl.it
then click on the orange balloon: " Informatica ".
then click on the blue link in the orange rectangle: " Hardware " (in a new
window is better, otherwise a sort of frame will appear on the left)
then click on " Networking " in the newly appeared column with grey
background.
Then click on the goodie 80113: Diamond SupraExpress 56iPRO (click on the
NAME !) and you have reached the first link I gave you.
>From there if you click on " Foto grande " (=Big photo) you get the second
link.

Stay cool, There is a wireless internet company setting up basestations in
London. The prices will probably be around £1000 start and
£99 per month for domestic users and £240 per monyh for business users.

The domestic users will have bandwith after business hours.

These connex are REAL IP connex, no dynamic shit.

BTW, the prices you got really sucks, I'm paying

£2100 as startup cost
£11275 per quarter ( 3 month )

2 year contract

And this is a 2 mbit permanent connection, no adsl joke but a real symmetric
connex.

Somebody gave you a really ripoff price on you leased line.

The prices i got are from 'you know who' and I'll just placed my order, so the
prices are a week old.

Mail me if you wanna know more Peter.

Cheers

Dan

It seems the RAID code was pulled from the released 2.2.12 code,
if I understand what was being discussed on the RAID mailing list.
On the one hand some folks say "it's been stable for a long time"
yet it appears Linus wasn't happy enough with the patches being in
the kernel so they were pulled. Not scheduled to re-appear until
a future 2.3.x flavor. Some one please jump in here if this isn't
exactly right!

That seems fine, then. There's a patch set for 2.2.11 that someone
contributed based upon the 2.2.9 patches; that's probably the best
one to go with although you might be able to use the last 2.2.12preX
patches instead. Should be basically the same functionality, I
think, but you may find the 2.2.12preX easier to find. (the "X"
means I don't remember how far the 2.2.12pre patches went).

That said, I might suggest looking into using one of the IDE
controllers from say, Promise. Their Ulta33 doesn't provide
any RAID functionality, but does give equal treatment to the
four drives connected to its cables. Their FastTrak card does
the RAID onboard, but I think only level 0/1. Perhaps another
drive plus the RAID kernel code could provide RAID 5 functions
on top of this? So many possible combos to choose from...

My test setup with two 13Gb drives on an Ultra33 controller
has worked okay so far, but not a 24/7 arrangement so not a
good data point for you.

Good call! ;-)

That's just the archive, mostly for development I think. You ought
to be able to find the list address and subscribe, but it's a good
way to see how RAID development is going anyway.

Good luck,

Subject: What ISDN adapter to buy?
Date: Sat, 04 Sep 1999 14:56:51 +0200

I'm planning to buy a passive ISDN adapter just for surfing on the net,
using Linux,
so I went to my local phone shop to get some advice...
I asked them if the had any ISDN adapters are supported under Linux ,
but they didn't knew...
So I asked the box of the external ISDN adapter to have a look... The
manual showed that it's controlled by an
extended AT Hayes set, afaict, so I think I can just use it as a
modem...

Only I realized one problem, afaik, the UART 16550 can only handle up to
10Kbyte/s
So I don't think I could - use it to/benefit when - combining two Lines
together, because the UART can't handle this...
So that brings me to an internal modem, but these are much likely to
give a problem on the driver side, also when trying out other OSes like
BeOS, FreeBSD etc....
Does anyone have an opinion on this?
