Hi,
i have tried compile kernel with HPT366 support,
it looks like device is
recognised bat booting stops at same place
i tried 2.3.50, 2.2.15-10 with Hedrick patch

i looked at /proc/pci:
d800,dc00,e000 IRQ 11
e400,e800,ec00 IRQ 11
i tried to boot with these parameters: linux
ide2=d800,dc00,11 ide3=e400,e800,11

If you have any guess i would be glad because i
have no idea

hardware:
Abit BE6 rev.II i440,ATX,slot1/150,ATA66
Quantum FIREBAL LP KX13.6 (UATA66)

boot:
HPT366: onboard version of chipset, pin1=1 pin2=2
HPT366: IDE controler on PCI bus 00 dev 98
HPT366: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs

HPT366: IDE controler on PCI bus 00 dev 99

I want to know if there are any comflicts with a Cyrix CPU and Linux. God
know it conflicts with almost anything else. :)

I have a dual boot with win98 and it works just fine in that OS. It
doesn't make too much sense to me. The CD player in Linux can read the CD
and starts to play it but no sound comes out.

I suggest you look at Dell and Compaq. They're shipping 8-way P3/Xeon
systems.

Try comparing kernel compilation times, for one. You
should already be running an SMP kernel on the SMP machine,
of course. The make command accepts the "-j" flag, which
will basically split up the compilation into multiple
processes ("make -j 2 bzImage" will compile in two processes
and so on). Compile a kernel with the same settings on
each machine multiple times, each time incrementing the
value you pass to the "-j" flag and time how long each machine
takes to compile.
Another way is to install one of those ray-tracing/rendering
applications like POV-Ray or Blender and compare the two machines
just like the way I explained above.
There are a handful of benchmarking tools and tips available
out there. Just fire up a search engine.

I have the same board and have to use 'hdc=cdrom' in lilo.conf to get it
to recognize. I have no idea why, just a plain jane ATAPI. It worked
fine with previous board. You can test this at the lilo prompt:

 linux hdc=cdrom

You might play with the jumpers on the drive too.

(4 x 12)/120 * 100 = 40% max..you said "that almost 50% of all Pentium
II/III motherboards shipped today to OEMs are VIA Apollo Pro based" So
that's an exaggeration for starter and the figures above is high. At best
1/3 are VIA as your figures tend to support.

Anyone can go to www.deja.com and do a USENET power search on all: via
busmaster problem, Feb 20 2000, 100 per page. There are 75 returns.
Start reading.

Do a USENET power search on all: intel busmaster problem, Feb 20 2000, 100
per page. There are 34 returns. Considering that Intel outsells VIA
~2:1........

Site a source for that unsubstantiated claim.
