Dear all,
(1) Xvidtune
Has anyone has some experience to share about Xvidtune. I am new with
this and would like to hear some thing before I use this.

(2) Connecting a Fix Freq Monitor
I have inherited fix frequency monitor (a HP 98785A: inside marked as a
Sony M41JSD15X) and hope to use it in my linux box. The HP 98785A has 5
BNC-plugs (red, green, blue and vsync/hsync).

Sorry for boring you guys at comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.video about
LINUX this is somewhat related ...

After reading some sites(see list below) about fix frequency (and some
Sync on Green) monitors. I am seriously considering to pick up some
cables, connectors and a soldering iron to make a set of BNC cable to
plug into the VGA (Dsub15graphics) connector of my graphic card. The
card is a Creative Blaster Extreme (AGP), PERMEDIA 2 with 4MB.

Q Can anyone help/advise before I start? (Short of buying an expensive
graphic card, do I really have to do this?)

Q Further to this is it correct that in Xconfigurator I should select..
"Non-Interlaced SVGA, 1024x768 @ 60 Hz, 800x600 @ 72 Hz" ? I am not all
certain if the HP98785A is a non-interlace monitor.

Q (BTW, what is a clockchip asked by Xconfigurator? Is this related in
anyway to the motherboard? (What I have is a Elitegroup
(www.ecs.com.tw) model P6BXT-A+.)

Q Can someone tell me what are te possible causes when, within the
server pressing Ctrl, Alt and '+' simultaneously to cycle video
resolutions do not work in my box?

P/S I am hoping that the image will eventually fill up the screen to
within 5 mm or so from the sides/edges. :-)

Thanks in advance,
any help would be greately appreciated.

:-)

Subject: Req. for info on rev. engineering an ISA (Backer) card
Date: Wed, 08 Mar 2000 23:04:54 -0700

Hi,

I have one of Danmere's ISA Backer 16 video tape backup cards. I am
interested in writing a linux device driver for the card but Danmere
will not release programing information for the beast. :-P well bugger
them.

So... for my next project I think I'll take a crack at reverse
engineering the interface. What I am looking for is recomendations for
any software tools that would help me do this. I have a fair bit of
experience with the ISA interface from both the hardware and software
end of things so I'm not a novice but I've never hacked someone else's
work before. The card is currently in my old DOS box and I have several
little DOS utilties that came with the card that just do some basic I/O
stuff. For my first attempt I tried watching one of the programs with a
debugger but that quickly got very tedious.

Any suggestions? If nothing is forthcoming it'll be back to the
debugger for me.

Since the actual backup software that came with the card is a windows
app, how good would the WINE debugger be at doing this? I've never done
*any* windows programing so I have no idea how hardware stuff is done
i.e. whether it's all handled by the windows libraries or whether it's
done "out-of-band" straight to the machine. Maybe someone could
straighten me out on this.

Also: if anyone else out there has one of these cards and is *also*
interested in poking away at it please drop me a line and we can pool
our resources. There are amateur radio people interested in using these
things as high speed modems over ATV channels so I'm not the only one
looking programing info... you know you're out there!

                                                        -Kipp

PS --- if anyone from Danmere is reading this... c'mon guys give a guy a
break will ya? We're all in this together.

Pardon my butting in....
Are you booting via lilo, if so add the following to lilo.conf:

  append = "aha152x=0x140,10,7,1"

see http://www.erols.com/jringer3/zipper.htm for more.

It sucks that 4MB of memory has to be dedicated to video.

Memory don't add up either. Physical ram is 64MB but
top shows only 58 MB.

Yeah, I've done that without success (by the way, no such thing as a "dumb
suggestion" with me :).

Here is my connect string:
CONNECT 49333/ARQ/V90/LAPM/V42BIS
It seems that my protocol is OK (?)

I did some more comparisons of the Win/Lin downloads and the problem is
definitely the following: Under Win, I maintain *constant* download speeds
of about 6 KB/s (the RD light on my modem is constantly lit during the
transfer), while under Lin, the download goes at that rate for 5 to 10
seconds and then stalls, then starts again,... (light toggles on and off).
It seems that when I am actually receiving data, I am receiving it at a
good speed. It's just that every several seconds every grinds to a halt.
What causes the sender to stop sending? Does my modem send a signal that
says "I have all I can handle right now"?
In any case, I am convinced more than ever that the bottleneck has
something to do with my computer processing the data that's coming in
rather than the speed with which it's getting here. But shouldn't setting
the serial port to spd_vhi keep this from happening? I've messed around
with changing this setting all the way down to spd_normal and it seems that
the results are exactly the same. It's as if my modem is acting under
spd_normal no matter what I tell it. (By the way, I'm sure I'm changing the
settings on the right port.) I am running out of ideas...

Thanks for the help folks.

Make sure your kernel-sources package is version 2.2.12, then compile again

I just got a Panasonic KXL-RW10A CD-R/RW for my laptop (with Mandrake
7.0 and kernel 2.2.15). This includes a Panasonic pcmcia scsi card.
However, I have serious problems whenever the card is inserted. I need
any tips and suggestions you have for configuring my system to work with
this card.

Also, if you have an external CD-R/RW, with a pcmcia scsi, what model
and brand is your working scsi card.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry dave but that doesn't wash, With TechNet and Microsoft KB, I
have access to the information now, and in detail. With Usenet, I may
or may not get the information, and when is a completely different
question, one thing you can't knock about Windows and MS is
_THE_DOCUMENTATION_ unfortunately, as with most things MS, you pay for
it.

Just a thought,

are you able to determine whether each modem stall is systematically
preceded by some other particular computer activity, e.g. a disk write?

Has anyone heard / does anyone know if the BJC-265 is supported / compatable
with linux? I see from the faq that other 200 series printers are but I
also know that a few numbers can mean bad things when it comes to
compatability. I am also aware that this is a relatively new printer and
may not be supported yet if it is significantly different from its previous
cousins.

I was using cdparanoia and dagrab. It was dagrab that would get the "skips".
cdparanoia seemed to work OK, but I was constantly getting IRQ timeouts
and IDE resets on the IDE CD-ROM (which is the only device on the secondary
IDE controller). And those seemed to cause cdparanoia to go very slow. In
fact, it took longer to rip the CD than to play it. I really didn't understand
that. But the Plextor rips (using cdparanoia - dagrab doesn't work at all -
it get ioctl() errors) so quickly that I finished up the last 15 CDs in
less than 2 hours. That includes converting the WAV files to MP3, using Xing's
encoder on a dual 450Mhz Pentium III system.

Again, I'm just happy with the drive and wanted to let others know of some
really good hardware.

John
