Subject: i820 chipset support?
Date: Sat, 20 May 2000 18:51:00 +1000
Hi,
I have seen a lot of posts about i810 chipset support, but I have been
looking at motherboards with i820 chips. Granted, it's a sure bet that
if i810 is still being worked on then i820 support isn't there yet.
However, I was wondering what this would mean to an end user. I assume
that the board would still work OK with Linux, but some of the flashier
hardware features would go unused, correct? I was trying to avoid the
i820, but the supplier I was talking to was saying that he can't get
hold of 600 MHz PIII CPUs for anything but a 133 MHz bus.
At least the front-runner among the motherboards (ASUS P3C-D) I am
considering at the moment supports SDRAM (with the help of a riser
card). It's even mentioned in the Linux Hardware Database, but no-one
has rated it yet.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this, please?
Cheers,
Chris.

As a non-techie (who's way too old), I'd like to seek advice from
anyone who can help.
I really, really would like to build my first computer. =) I am
hoping to run Win2k Pro on master HD and Linux on slave HD. My planned
system specs are as below - I'd truly appreciate it if there are any
problems, hardware/ software/ otherwise which I might encounter. If
there are alternative opinions as to how I should go about W2k Pro/
Linux setting up, I'd appreciate that too.
Processor: Athlon K7-700 MhZ
Motherboard: Asus K7V KX 133 chipset
Memory: 1 stick 128 MB PC133 SDRAM DIMM (72 bit wide ECC) (branded)

Subject: ZIP drive problems
Date: 20 May 2000 11:20:48 GMT
I've just bought a second-hand parallel port ZIP drive (100Mb) and am trying
to get kernel support (2.2.15 running over Debian potato) for it. I have SCSI
support and SCSI disk support, no printer support, and as modules parport,
parport_pc, imm and ppa. I don't know whether the drive should be imm or ppa
but I suspect the latter, since it's likely to be a couple of years old.
insmod ppa tells me that it can't find any attached devices, and then
init_module: Device or resource busy pops up. Similar message for imm. This is
whether or not parport_pc has been inserted, and both appear to depend on
parport so this is always present.
Any ideas what's going wrong? Can't find mention in the HOWTO about this. I
don't know whether I should be using parport_pc and if so what the settings
should be so help with any of this would be appreciated.

The Chip is not so hard to identify, WINBOUND is written on it. In my case
(ASUS PLsomething) it resides left to the PCI slots!

Look for Slackware's printer administration tool. I don't know if it's
called 'printtool' as it is in RedHat.

Hey bud,
Personally, I would get more RAM and 2 Western Digital HD. I basically
have the same setup you do and I have no problems (except for the fact that
I don't use linux. But now I have a laptop also, so that fixed that
problem). You might want to ask your video card in a new message to the
group. I'm not sure if it will work, but its a good idea to ask.

I had a similar problem once before and it was because of the LBA in the
BIOS. I changed the drive type from LBA to NORMAL in BIOS and everything
worked fine. This may not be the answer, but it worked for me.

no, there is no printtool in slackware...
however, there is script called apsfilter, which is an input filter...
unfortunately it only works with local printers
right now i am modifying printcap file...
btw, can i use PSfilter(supplied by accton) as an output filter?

You might want to re-think that decision -- Intel's recalling 820 boards
with sdram support --- bugs in the memory translator chip can cause random
lockups and reboots........

RedHat is the biggest/most visible Linux distro company at the moment, so
a good many computers running Linux are running the RedHat variety of
same. It's fashionable to hate the big guy and cheer for the little guy,
for reasons which are deeply rooted in human psychology. Maybe it's
because people think that if MS vanished overnight, Bob Young would start
acting just lke Bill Gates.
That said, there are some things wrong with RedHat's distro.
0. User private groups? Yech! Completely unneccessary.
1. RPMs. Oh, they seem to work well at first, but it's terribly easy to
get lost in a twisty maze of dependencies, all slightly different.
2. Convoluted, complex init-script layout in /etc/rc.d/init.d/ and
also in /etc/sysconfig/ that for some strange reason overwrites /etc/issue
upon every boot.
3. Silly default settings for a number of things like PS1.
Similar arguments can be made for every distro in existence, though. The
truth is that All Software Sucks, and RedHat is taking flak because
they're the most visible at the moment.

I'm not sure if you have tryed this. but when i set up 2 network cards
in the same box i had to add the line
append="ether=eth1"
into my /etc/lilo.conf file, then run lilo to make the changes take
effect. you will also have to re-start the machine. after that it should
detect the second card.

Everything should work well, but see below:
Don't bother getting both a DVD and a CD-ROM. DVDs can read CD-ROM discs,
so save $50 and just get the DVD, or spend another $100 and get a CD-RW
instead of a CD-ROM. The Matrox G400 is well-supported under Linux, but
for dual-head support you need to buy a commercial X-server at the
moment. This will get fixed later, I presume. The SB Live series seem to
be a pain in the arse to install under Linux, but the latest kernel
includes the appropriate modules in the main source tree--no need to
patch, just compile the emu10k module and go.
To set up Lose2K and Linux at the same time, have a look at the
documentation on http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/ on getting Linux to work with
NT. Lose2K and LoseNT are very similar. Good luck....

Find out which IRQ, I/O, and DMA values the card uses in DOS. Then you
should read the documentation in /usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound/Opti
for what to do next. All the modules you need should be compiled and in
the right place already; you'll probably just have to execute the
following command:
modprobe mad16 irq=X io=Y dma=Z dma16=W
Y will probably be 0x530, but don't take my word for it. W is the
higher-numbered DMA channel you see in DOS.
>Also, does anyone have any suggestions on a better browser than Netscape?
Define "better". KDE's file manager/browser, kfm, is much more
lightweight and less crash-prone, but it lacks some features. (SSL,
integrated mail/news client, plugins) Lynx and w3m are completely stable
and very lightweight... but they're text-only. Mozilla is supposed to be
the future of Netscape, but it's still in development.

I suggest you compile parallel printer support as a module, then plug the
drive in and try first "modprobe ppa" then "modprobe imm". The options
you want for parport_pc are probably "io=0x378 irq=7" and you want the
parallel port set in the BIOS to EPP mode. HTH, HAND.
