I don't think wipe.exe returns the disk to "needing an fdisk/format". It simply
writes 0's over the existing info, leaving it partitioned and formatted just fine.
And some programs, I'm not sure about wipe.exe, will write 0's, then go back over
it with 1's, then 0's again, or as many times as you specify.

1U servers are a bit hard to get this side of the atlantic - they're
easily available the other side. It's partly because of different
power supplies - the ones used in US 1U servers would not pass safety
this side even if they would handle the voltage.

IBM will sell you a 230 volt 1U server but the prices are
fierce. Cobalt will too, but they don't quote prices and I think
they're expensive as well. 2U boxes are easier to find and 4U boxes
you can get more or less anywhere.

Cobalt at <URL:http://emea.cobalt.com/products/raq/index.html>
VA Linux at <URL:http://www.valinux.com/products/1000ts.html> but I
don't think it does 230 volts.

I'm pretty sure there's a market for someone to produce a UK spec 1U
box at a reasonable (say, sub UKP1,000) price.

Kludge-method for cooling monitor:

1) acquire a small refrigerator (i.e. "beer fridge")
2) cut a video-tube-sized opening in the door
3) fit monitor components within the cooling cavity, placing
video-tube such that it mounts cleenly in the opening in the
   fridge door.
4) close fridge door
5) plug in fridge
6) connect monitor
7) commence use of monitor

;-)

That did the trick! I didn't know to look within gnome or kde's control
panels. Yeah! It's fixed, thanks for your help Matt. :-)

I agree with you. I wish these distributions would not try to be so
"Windows" like.

take care.

If you're talking about the Motorola 88k-based systems (I don't know if
the later intel-based systems were also called Aviion) you're out of
luck - no support for 88k so far. The closest you can get is the M88k
OpenBSD port which currently runs on Motorola MVME187.

Of course, that doesn't help at all with keeping the room cool since a
refrigerator will only pump heat from the inside(the monitor) to the
outside(the room) with additional heat in the process! I think the
original question in the this thread was how to keep the room cool.

Yeah, that's a wonderful kludge method for cooling the monitor ---- but,
guess what? You've just INCREASED the overall heat load in the room, unless
you've also figured out some way to get the refrigerator heat exchanger
outside (perhaps a hole in an outside wall in which said refrigerator is
mounted?)

I recently costed it out myself, buying the bits from Insight.com, and the
case from the previously mentioned pcicase, and it came out the around
UKP650 (inc. vat) (C550,64Mb,17GbIDE,CD,Floppy,2x100Mbps) [Anyone know any
cheap colocation deals?]

So, it is very possible - however, as another poster put it, you have the
watch the cooling, so its one thing doing it for yourself, and another
having to offer guarantees etc. for others. Then again, you can get stuff
wholesale/trade, which reduces things a bit too...

A friend of mine is looking for a software tool
for testing the devices connected to a PC

He knows AMI Diag, that works for Windows
and was looking for something similar for Linux

Thanks in advance.
