If the chip is 2.7v it may be oversupplied at 2.8v.

If when it starts to boot it reports an expected speed they you are OK
as far as jumper settings.

To see if everything else is OK, try to find a Pentium MMX 200 or 233
(P55C) to try instead, or an older K6 chip that runs on one of the
voltage settings your motherboard can supply. 200 & 233 P55C is common
and cheap due to widespread upgrading to compatible K6 varieties. Some
sources still have new ones available. Many had trouble with the Cyrix
CPU like you have. Your system may be usable with a different CPU chip.

Does Linux support USB prior to the 2.4 kernel? If so, how/where can I find
info. on getting this working. The Iomega website doesn't have any drivers
for the USB models.

Thanks,

I don't have much experience with Cyrix CPUs, but I know that the specs you
are listing are correct. The 2.5x is the core/bus ratio. If your bios
reports 200MHz, the setup is already wrong. But underclocking is less of a
problem than overclocking.

>Bus is set to 66Mz with jumper, voltage is set to 2.8 V (there is no

That is already an incompatibility between the CPU and motherboard
(voltage), but the Cyrix should be fine running at 2.8. There have been
reported voltage incompatibility problems with the older 6x86's though..
The Cyrix is designed for a bus speed of 83MHz, but should also work at 66.

>I think clock multiplier is set at 1.5x. It's hard to tell because the

Probably not. 200MHz=3x66MHz. Try 4x66=266 if you can figure out the right
jumper combo.

>socket. Jumper set 6 seems to be set to 1.5x Jumper set 5, if it were

That's more likely, see above :)

It's sometimes hard to tell what the problems on such systems are, and I
know that the Cyrix's have a somewhat shaky history on these models, so try
a few different settings, you may have more luck at 83MHz bus, but probably
not.

No, you pretty much got the deluxe treatment.

In the meantime, I've asked David St. Clair
( http://www4.ncsu.edu/~distclai/rage128-howto.html ) what
could go wrong with the XPERT 2000.

I've painted the distortion problem into a screen shot, so it's
easier to discuss how the distortions look like (if you need the
picture, mail me).

Here is his answer:

=======
I have seen another computer that used an older ATI Mach 64 card
and a cheap monitor that had a similar problem (Emachine).
We fixed it by upgrading to 4.0 and things got much clearer and the
distortions went away. I don't suppose you are running 4.0?
I don't know what else to tell you. Not many people have this problem.
=======

So, I'll do an upgrade to XFree86 4.0 and see what happens.

Change your fstab entry to mount it as a SCSI device, e.g. /dev/scd0.
There you go.

I am using ABIT BP6 motherboard and IBM 20GIG HD in UDMA (IDE3)

When I am trying to install Linux, it's invisible in the partition menu.

How can I make it recognize my drive? I've had the same problem in

Not particularly. There are backports to 2.2.x, but it would probably be
easier to just use a known "stable" 2.3 or 2.4 release. FWIW 2.3.99-pre3
didn't suffer as much from the horrible VM problems plaguing the current
development kernel...

You expect Iomega's official wing to give a damn about Linux? Hee
hee. Anyway, the ZIP 250 should be seen as a normal USB-storage device
under the 2.3 and 2.4 series, provided you compile the kernel with the
correct options. http://linux-usb.org/ has more information on Linux and
USB devices.

Old DOS fdisk did not handle non-MS partitions well. If your DOS
fdisk cannot see/handle non-MS partitions, you can get DR DOS--which
will-- or make a linux rescue/boot floppy (from net sources or your red
hat cd) and get linux fdisk to delete the linux partitions.

I have the same problem and if you set the settings

the current XFree 4.0 on Mandrake 7.1 has been
compiled without DPMS support.
Some other posts had suggested to add options DPMS
