Using lizard, and after much trial, error, and testing, I managed to get it
to like 1280x1024 with 32 bits of color. This was not possible using any
other xconfig program. BTW, I'm running Caldera 2.4.

Don't ask questions like this in here!
This is mainly a question of taste.
I use emacs or vi together with gcc/g++
and gdb.

Date: Fri, 21 Jul 2000 07:54:27 GMT

Hello!

This is a question of a nebie about CD ROM drives. I´ve got 2 cd roms
(player-recorder). Using bash or KDE enviroment, system doesn´t allow me to
mount the recorder device when I try to use it. That drive is a Yamaha (I
don´t remember the model specifications, I´m out of home now). Is there a
fast and easy explication for this problem, or have I got to make something
in the system?

A nice solution is in the following:

- Install Win: it will for it the first partition of your disk (of
course...).

- With a partition tool such as Partition Magic or similar resize the
Win partition (WP) to about 1,5 Gb. Create one other partition under the
2 Gb limit (do a 10 Mb partition! You are surely not out for 5
megabytes). This is the boot partition for Linux (BP).

- Now create an extended partition covering the entire HD (what
remains...) and in it create some FAT16 or FAT32 for your Win programs
and data and the Linux Ext2 partitions for your penguin.

- LILO can boot without problems with this configuration.

If your HD is a 27 Gb it's better for you to use the FAT32 improvement
if you won't manage a C/D/E/F/G/H/I list of disks under Win.

Better to install first Win becouse many releases do format the entire
HD.

If you experience some problems feel free to mail.

Make sure the entry in your fstab treats it as read only (ro).

Hmm ok so you can load the kernel off the first drive in the RAID, but
the redundancy is kind of lost here, is there a way to have total
redundancy ? (also at boot-time)

ie. if hda's bootsector fails, fall back to hdb boot. I suppose you
could put lilo on the second disk, but you'd have to rely on the BIOS
booting from hdb when hda fails. How reliable is that?

btw I have since found a nice hardware solution also (here in holland),
a simple ata66 raid1 module that fits nicely into 2 5.25" bays and
provides hardware redundancy for around $300, inclusive 2 removable hdd
caddies (CRS1003 http://www.procase.nl/ICY_CRS.htm ).

that I should look at the lilo config, but so far I havn't been able to make

So, suggestions on how to remove my missing memory is great appreciated!!

There is afaik no support for SpeedStream3060 at this point.

Mitchell Blanks is behind the PPP patch needed, he also does part of the work
on the SpeedStream 30x0 driver:
http://www.sfgoth.com/~mitch/linux/atm/pppoatm/

Jens Axboe has also done parts of the work on the driver as well as the pppoatm
module you need for PPP. And you should use his kernel patch!
http://sunsite.auc.dk/ftp/pub/os/linux/kernel.org/kernel/people/axboe/PPPoATM/

(Use ftpsearch, fx. http://ftpsearch.lycos.com/?form=medium to find a more
local to the US, Asia or Australia)

For you who doesn't have the 3060:
Follow Mitchell Blanks and Jens Axboes instructions. This includes a lot of
patching of the kernel (axboe) and ppp (mitch)

For the ppp patch to work you need to compile atm first!

If you got a 3060 you might want to do some sourcecoding on your own, just
download and do the same things and get working :-).

The driver is very preliminary, don't write to authors that you cannot get it
to work (unless you actually got good suggestions that might save time)

I did a bit of talking to Axboe as it had been six months since the last driver
and I did have suggestions, so I guess if you got any questions about
installing the 3010/20 you might start here.

If it's already missing, why remove it ;) No pun intended :)

Getting serious for a moment, type "linux mem=396M" at the lilo prompt and
see what happens. If it works, add "append="mem=396M"" to your image stanza
in /etc/lilo.conf (could look like this:)

image=/boot/vmlinuz
        root=/dev/hda2
        label=linux
        read-only
        append="mem=396M"

Remember to run /sbin/lilo after changing lilo.conf.

An update for anybody who cares.

The cards do not have the same address as I first thought. A diagnostic
tool provided with the cards did not show the conflict I saw with ifconfig.
As best I can tell the driver (fa311.c) is generating the address at random
(at least the card specific suffix) and must not be accounting for two cards
in one machine.

I have since noticed more strange behavior, such as "depmod" reporting
unresolved external symbols in the driver. At this point I am giving up on
the card and would recommend staying away from it for anybody else
contemplating purchasing the card.

  -- David.

p.s. The following is the response I got from netgear web support, I thought
it was pretty funny:

============
Hello David,

If your linux box can support 2 Network cards, please try another brand
with the FA311 rather than using the same two cards and the same two
drivers.

It's impossible to tell without a better description of the system (and the
error message you are getting) - what is on the CD, where is your root
partition, (other partitions) etc. Please post back with a detailed
description of your filesystems and setup.

If your system panics and says it cannot mount the root filesystem, it
could very well be that your kernel is looking for the root filesystem in
the wrong place. If you're using lilo, you can specify the location of your
root fs with something like this on the lilo prompt:

linux root=/dev/hda1 (provided your root fs is in /dev/hda1, and the kernel
label is linux). Or is your root fs _on_ the CD?

How did you setup the modem to work in your old Linux system?

Can you set the IRQ and port using jumpers or your modem is pure PNP?

What are currently the settings of the modem, if there are jumpers?

If you've set the modem to occupy COM1 or COM2, did you disable the
appropriate onboard port ?

And BTW : all those questions are not specifically related to Linux. They
are valid in Windows too.

Make sure you turn OFF, the APMD daemon as this might cause a problem.. I'd
boot it up in single user mode and watch it run for awhile... ("linux 1"
when you get the lilo prompt.) Or, make a bootable MSDOS disk and boot up
under this. Then, if the machine goes off, but the paripherie doesn't, then
you have either a bad power supply or a bad motherboard in the computer...

I don't believe you have an OS problem, I think you have the beginnings of a
hardware failure.

Not surprising either as GW's have been nice in that when they go bad...
THEY GO BAD. None of the middle of the road crap... Nice to fix.

My gut instinct is to do this and watch it. I bet you have a power supply
that is failing, and if it is, the PS's in them are rather generic enough
that you can shop around for a clone for it and probably get a heftier one
(>300w?)

You want fun with Netgear support? I've been going back and forth with

told me the driver they shipped, now I just got an email today where
