Hi there,

I am not sure that it will help but I had a similar problem. I had RedHat 6.1
and in Windows I got IP address from DHCP server without problem but in Linux
interface could not get IP. After several days sowhere I read that some
problems was solved by switching PnP OS in BIOS. I decided to try it and I was
very surprised that it works. Now, I recommend to every one to disable PnP OS
in BIOS as only they get their computers running. As only official 2.4 kernel
will available this step will come in the past but for now try it and I hope to
hear that it worked. ( I beleive that you still have this option ON)

Hi there,

I don't have this drive at the moment to give precise instructions but I was
able to help solve same problem to one guy. HE said that he tried get help from
Compaq and RedHat but without success. So, all should works in your system only
you should know:

1. that most DDS3 drives has spesial DIP switches on drive itself and there
   is one switch responcible
    for:
         a. switch compression on on power on
         b. disable compression completely
For more info go to tapedrive manufacture webpage and dig out info about
    DIP switches for your drive

2. you can change compression through program - read man mt - it has this option

there. If you will have problems after getting this info just contact me and
I will dig out this info for you.

Hope that you will find how to do that (or I will forward my previos letter for
that guy).

No. That's why I don't follow the kernel of the day. The Duck Soup de Jouir.

I'm still running 2.2.14. That was 2.5 months ago, before that, it's 2.0.13.

Have no intention to use even 2.2.16, let alone 2.4.micky. ;-)

I update the kernel every 12 months or so. I only care about stability. I don't
care about the latest and the trendiest 3D video card, sound card, ATAdrivers etc.
No games in any of my boxes. I play my music , watch my DVDs on stand alone home
players on real sound system. ;-)

I just update whatever needed for security bug fixes on the apps that I use. And
there ain't that many. Since Linux is basically my net surfing box. All my real
servers run on *BSD and commercial unix.

Thanks for your reply,

I got it working by manually adding the following settings in my etc/hosts
file:

DNS Servers ISP
Gateway Address for my router
Hostname and IP of Linux Box
Loopback Address of Lan Card on (127.0.0.1)
IP and Hostname of the primary DHCP Server (which is my NT -2000 box)

Linksys contacted me and I am going to suggest they add the above
information to their Linux Docs for the Etherfast 4 port Hub.

Once again and thanks a million.

Hi there,

I'd like that you checked that in BIOS you have PnP OS option switched to
OFF.
1. Now you can try to change PCI slots for Sound card and NIC as BIOS by
default
    assign IRQ to some slots.
2. But you can download (or may be you have it on floppy which you got with
NIC)
software for NIC and assign it diffrent available IRQ and may be IO
ports.
3. In some BIOS you can assign IRQ to PCI slots by hand.

So, now your turn to select preferable method to assign resources to SOUND
and NIC -
select one which better fit your case.

You can always ping the loopback address 127.0.0.1 from the linux machine.

there are two method to solve the problem:

I had far more trouble installing windows95 than I had with linux. I
agree that X configuration is just the worst part of the linux install.

I'll be surprised if you don't get flamed for that one!

See below. Use XFree86 3.3.6. XFree86 4.0.1 is not quite ready for the
i810--or for general usage, although it can be made to work. It will
likely take a revision or two before version 4 can totally replace
3.3.6.

Suse 6.4 is probably your best bet.

Otherwise, I've got my i810 board working wonderfully using the linux
video drivers at support.intel.com, and sound at www.alsa-project.org.
Can't help with the ethernet card, though.

Yes. You won't get 3D video easily, but sound is quite decent. Check
support.intel.com for video driver and www.alsa-project.org for sound.

I haven't used Mandrake, but SUSE 6.4 should have all these drivers
included. RedHat does not, but works great once you download the above
drivers from the net.

Just to clarify, I didn't mean to imply that video doesn't work on this
motherboard. 2D video works perfectly. It's 3D that only partially
works. SUSE 6.4 includes the 3D driver.

Here's the system:

PIII-700 MHz
Supermicro PIII-SED MB
64 MB RAM
RedHat 6.0 kernel 2.2.15?

After downloading and installing the XFree86 binaries, when I attempt to run
XFree86 -configure, the server tries to start up and fails because it can't
load the libglide2x module. I shutdown the machine and tried to reboot and
when the "Starting X Font Server" line comes up, it just sits there forever.
So, before I yank the whole installation, and reinstall with RedHat 6.0,
since I haven't been able to get a website to let me download the latest
RedHat disk image to burn a CD from, I would like to know if there are any
linux sources that have XFree86 4.0.x already in the installation? I'm
trying to run GRASS and the only reason I have a linux box is for that
purpose. I thought it would be easier than downloading all the win32 ports
and compiling the software under win32/cygwin.

So, back to the task at hand. I can run XF86config (i think that's the
filename) fine and when my X session starts, the setting is for some giant
screen and my cursor is about 1/2"x1/2" on a 15" monitor. like I have a
virtual desktop, but I can't scroll and can only see the top left 1/4 of the
screen.

I found the Linux Installation Guide on the intel website for it has me
going through all kinds of gyrations for downloading and installing the
3.3.5 XFree86 and XFCom-i810 and agpart, and then rebuilding the kernel.

I'd rather just pull the MB out and purchase one that won't cause me fits. I
could have done that in an hour or two and not wasted the entire day.

Any hints or ideas?

Jeff.
