The 3d Nvidia drivers are only needed if you want full access to the 3d
capabilities of the Geforce card. During your initial install of Linux you
must make sure that the svga server package is installed. Once you get into
the XFree86 setup screen select 'Card' from the top menu and you should see
a window with a bunch of video card names, scroll down and select Generic
Geforce and then select 'Monitor' from the top menu and select your monitor
type from the list or manually enter the vertical and horizontal frequencies
for your monitor. Finally select the last menu item and select done and it
should test to see if your X server will come up,if it does then you can
select save configuration and reboot. You could also just do text based
install (say no to X configuration during install) and then once you have a
running system you can setup X by running either xf86config (text) or
XF86Setup (graphical) which would allow you to install a newer version of
XFree86 before doing the configuration. Also, if you want a more automated
hands off installation then try Mandrake 7.1, it's very good at setting up
hardware and will set up a very nice gui with very little effort.Anyway, I
hope I've been of some help as I'm not too good at expaining things ( I know
what I want to say but I'm not very good at writing it down)

Rob.

You can get a patch at www.linux-ide.org for the kernel, or you can try
the workaround so that you can use it without the patch (using the boot
options during the installation process):
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA-5.html

Although this is for the Promise Ultra33 controller, it also works with
the Ultra66 and the on-board Ultra100. In this case, you end up with
the ATA100 drive being /dev/hde

Hello people,

Would like to find out if there is a driver for the card ATI Rage II 128 (AGP). Cannot
seem to get it to work under Redhat 6.1.

Thanks a million.

I have 2 printers - one is a HP deskjet 500, and a ditto Easy 800 tape
drive that work fine under windows, but when I plug in the cable from
the HP deskjet to the linux box, the online lite freezes where it is and
won't accept any input from the buttons on the printer. as soon as you
unplug the printer cable from the parallel port, the printer
reinitiallizes

In the bios I hard configured the port to 378 and IRQ 7.

when I cat files to:

cat whatever > /dev/lp0

or lp1 or lp2, I get the message "No such device"

any ideas? How do I check if the lp device is working properly?

Thanks!,

Very likely. UDMA is backwards compatible.

No need to reformat, the file system is still the same :)

Plug them in, and mount. Note though that UDMA100 or even 66 might not be
fully supported yet - I recommend getting the latest 2.4.0-test-kernel.

Redhat 6.1 comes with Xfree86 3.3.5, as far as I can remember. Try
upgrading to 4.0.1, it will be worth it with your card.

A very usefull post with lots of information, but your prices on DDS media are
rather high. Looks like dirt cheap drives doesn't have very good deals on
media. For DDS you can get DDS2 tapes for less than $5, DDS3 for less than
$12, and DDS4 for about $25. I see NS-20 tapes at buycomp for $31 and TR-4s
for $24.

So, with those media costs, the break even point is 10 tapes for DSS2/TR4 and
16 tapes with DDS3/NS20.

Subject: modems modems modems

ok, here's what I've got:

I have a modem that worked fine on my 486 with the same dist of linux
(suse 6.4). I now have a pentium with a pnp bios. No go on the modem.

I've turned off all "auto pnp" type functions in my bios as per the
pnptools manual's recomendation.

My bios values are:

port 1: 2f8/3
port 2: 3f8/4
uart: normal

port 2 is the mouse. This seems odd to me because of the uart thing.
If I set port 2 to "Disabled", the uart option disapears. This
suggests that the uart option is exclusive of port 2.

I generated a isapnp.conf with pnpdump. I've tried each configuration
offered and none work. I can put just any free irq and address, and
that makes isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf happy, but I still cant talk to the
modem.

Any ideas? (besides buying an external modem? :) )

thanks

miah

Sure it can be. Some European DVDs have no encoding on them, you can
play them without DeCSS. The VOB file contains the straight MPEG-2
stuff.

As per why bother with the encriprion > For example, to get hefty
royalties from the player manufacturers. Or to enforce the zone
locking (Europeans don't bother, they already pay the highest price
so they can't loose ...).

Actually, in Hungary, the film Csinibaba (Dollybirds), which got
quite an appealing critique on KinoEye and the Grand Prize of a
local film festival has even been released on a DVD supplement
of one of the local PC magazines. It is the full movie, no CSS,
zone locks, nothing. Well, you have to speak Hungarian to understand
it, for it doesn't have dubbing tracks but apart from that, it's all
yours for free.

Not all filmmakers are entirely profit driven like the MPAA members.
Some even have original ideas and don't have to resort to (badly)
remake European success films with Hollywood cast and heavy-duty
copyright protection :-P

Subject: Re: No modem will work on my win98 box (or RH6.1 box)
Date: Fri, 1 Sep 2000 03:38:15 -0500

note: this is orginally a "Windows" post, but now I think Linux users
might be able to help as well.

Short version: I can't get my modem working on my win98 box. I tried
using Linux, but it still didn't work.

Long version:

This is a doozie!

I tried just that (below)... and to no avail. Like I said before on my
original post, I tried using my ASKEY 56kbpd modem (PCI) and it didn't
workt. I tried using my Jaton v90 56Kbps internal modem (ISA) and it won't
work. I know THIS modem is good because I'm using it right now to post
this message on my old 486sx-50 mhz Linux box.

I thought to myself ... well, maybe the ISA port is bad (on the win98
box). So I plugged my Sound Blaster card into the ISA slot where the modem
didn't work, rebooted, and sure enough - I got the Win98 "Sprinkle" sound.
So I know the port is okay and I know the modem is okay... hmmf.

So I go to more drastic measures - I try a different OS. In a matter of
~20 minutes thanks to my 48x cdrom,- I convert the win98 box to a dual
boot with RH Linux 6.1... but it STILL won't work.

I KNOW that I've configured the jumpers correctly on the modem (again
because I am using it right now). I have concluded that - for some reason
- the computer will not recognize any *modem* device (ISA or PCI)
regardless of which specific slot I choose, what COM setting I use (com1
or 2) in windows, ttySx setting in Linux. Is it possible that there is
some setting on the motherboard ( a jumber or dip switch) that must be
configured before using it with a MODEM? The motherboard chipset is
ALiM1541 A1 - 100 MHz. The CPU is an AMD-K6 400Mhz w/ 64 MB of RAM.

This comptuer has fallen from upright position (it's a mini tower) to
horizontal by accident. I thought that this could have damaged the ports
- but , again - I TESTED that with the Sound Blaster card (ISA). I didn't
check all the PCI slots, but I strongly suspect it wouldn't matter.

Does anyone recognize this problem?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Have you tried ALSA? It's still early days but it seems to be supporting
