Asking this before I buy,

If yes, is it possible to

-watch TV, (hopefully :)
-use the remote control
-hear radio
-watch teletext
-capture (rather futile, since no compression supported, I know)

?

Ich benutze den CR-2801TE von Mitsumi. L=E4uft nach
Aktivierung der SCSI-Emulation im Kernel ohne Probleme.
Welche Tips brauchst Du?

Hi Mark!

Try the Mitsumi CR-4801TE. It's an ATAPI-CD R writer. Should work fine
with Linux.
I'm using the older model, the CR-2801TE. The only difference between
those two
devices is the writing speed (the CR-4801 can write CD-R at 4x, mine can
only write
at 2x speed). One disadvantege: the Mitsumi devices ending with 1
(2801-TE, 4801-TE)
can only write CD-Rs, not CD-RW.

Hello everybody,

I would be very happy to listen any success stories about building low-cost
(Intel hardware based) high-performance systems on Linux.

In particular, I'd like to hear about the following topics:
- multiprocessor systems with more than 2 processors,
- redundant database servers (multihost RAID, Kimberlite?)
- parallel N-node clusters (RedHat High Availability, TurboLinux?)

If the information isn't top secret classified, I'd like to know the
following:
1. hardware configuration, i.e. vendor and model of motherboard, processor,
hard drives, controllers, etc.
2. software configuration, i.e. kernel version, additional software
3. what the system is used for (problem domain), what is the system's load
and the performance
4. your personal opinion about the system's overall performance and
stability

I'll also be glad to be told any URLs on the topic.

Cheers,
Timur

Subject: Install of SoundBlaster 64 AWE
Date: Mon, 25 Sep 2000 16:56:11 +0200

Hello,

Since the last week, i try to install all my hardware under Linux
(Mandrake 7.0 Kernel 2.2.14).
I can't achieve to install my sound blaster. I read the following text :
 - The Linux sound HOWTO,
 - The SB64 Linux HOWTO,
 - /usr/src/linux/Documentation/AWE32
 - The Linux kernel HOWTO,
 - several kind answers from newsgroups which permit me to compil my
kernel.

To install the SoundBlaster 64 AWE, i do :
1. pnpdump > isapnp.conf and i correct it : this file is at the end of
this message. When i launch :
isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
the result is :
Board 1 has Identity 16 00 01 41 2e 9d 00 8c 0e: CTL009d Serial No
82222 [checksum 16]
CTL009d/82222[0]{Audio }: Ports 0x220 0x330 0x388; IRQ5
DMA1 DMA5 --- Enabled OK
CTL009d/82222[1]{Game }: Port 0x200; --- Enabled OK
CTL009d/82222[2]{WaveTable }: Ports 0x620 0xA20 0xE20; ---
Enabled OK

2. cd /usr/src/linux
3. make mrproper
4. make menuconfig : for the sound card specifications, i respect the
usr/src/linux/Documentation/AWE32 : But i don't find "General OPL2/OPL3
synthethiser" entry.
5. make dep
6. make clean
7. make bzImage
8. make bzdisk
9. make modules
10. make modules_install
11. make install
12. make /sbin/lilo -v -l
13. reboot

The result : when kde start : no sound (kdeaudio failed to
connect to server)
I launch isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf, the result is the same than before in
this message.
I launch modprobe -a sound, Linux writes nothing.

When i launch :
cat /proc/devices
I see
...
14 sound
...
When i launch :
cat /dev/sndstat
there's no sound card installed

I don't know what i can do. If someone can help me, thanks.

Best regards.

Why build it yourself when you can buy something pre-built for
cheap? Check out the following link:

I got one when they were still called Miro. Works perfectly with the BT848
drivers. It'll do TV, teletext and capture but I'm not sure about the remote
control or radio since mine was only the standard version.

Thanks guys.

I've just been testing some new dists. I got Mandrake 7.1 and it just sat
there not recognising anything. Then I tried SUSE 7.0 and it picked
absolutely everything up! Marvellous! It even got my video chipset which is
not and has never been supported by X. I had to use the framebuffer server
to get it working last time, SUSE picked the closest driver and reconfigured
it with the SVGA server.

I know this is completely off topic for this particular little thread, but I
started it so there! Just to illustrate that some distributions have
actually arrived remarkably close to the elusive "automated setup".
Unfortunately SUSE is one of the few distributions I have never used so I'm
a little lost and without the kernel source (why oh why didn't they include
the kernel source??) I can't recompile it to support my CD writer or my TV
card. D'oh!

I'll try your solutions and hopefully get everything working properly with
Red Hat (or Mandrake, I haven't decided yet, not that it makes much
difference).

Thanks again.

Adam

If you download under windows, if you're doing it thru the browser it
should be just fine. If you use the command line FTP, make sure to type

I hit the same problem, and I'm working toward recompiling the kernel to
get around it, but I'm looking for other solutions because recompiling
kernel's makes me nervous, and if I do have to do it I would much rather
be able to use the 750 mhz T-bird rather than a backup 133 mhz pentium.

I've dug around in the kernel code and found the code that aborting. It
looks like I should be able to disable the logic that is attempting to
disable to CPUID number by setting a runtime parameter
disable_x86_serial_nr to zero. Specifying "linux disable_x86_serial_nr=0"
on the lilo boot line doesn't work, nor does adding the parameter to the
lilo configuration file. I've never tried to set boot time parameters
before and am wondering if there is something really obvious that I am
missing.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Including CSS logic is a legal issue, not a technical one. By the way,
each DVD takes
aout 5 GB. 80G can store 16 DVDs, if it is legal to do so. The MPAA said
no.

A software DVD player (no CSS) has been posted to http://linnix.com.
However, you need
a heavy duty cooler to cool down a 700 to 800 MHz CPU needed. My dual
pentium II 350
gets about 24 frames and acceptable sound. Forget about anytinhg less than
500 MHz.
Regarding hardware accelerators, Sis6326 for video and cs4360 for Dolby 5.1
audio may be
the best combinations, in the future, that is. Most other manufacturers
would not release
spec or talk to us. Using these accelerators, you can get by with a 200 to
300 MHz CPU,
but then you have to pay for them and cool them down as well.
