Having worked with Corel Linux, I can attest to the fact
that their distribution isn't up to par. Pick another one
instead. Somebody else in this thread suggested RedHat,
I'll suggest Debian. Corel is based on Debian which seems
to mean that Corel took a Debian distro, threw out some
stuff, and re-labelled it. Remember Corel's only been in
the Linux biz for about a year. It shows.

The FA311 has limited support, and is not supported out of the box in Redhat
7.0 Of course, you can make it work by compiling your own driver, but I
gather the source code is for a 2.2 kernel only.

Next time check the Redhat Hardware Compatibility List.

Lots 'o luck with this one...

Thanks. That took care of the problem. Again...me being stupid. I "tried"
to set the irq to 3 to match the bios before, but I didn't get the command
line for setserial right. Once I used the command line you mentioned, the
problem was solved.

No, I will post here.. to use CGA on Xfree86 will limit you to
at the best 640x200 by two colors. You get black and white only! CGA
works fine in text (console) as I had one plugged into my slackware
3.1 system without a hitch. If one REALLY wants to do this. I am sure
there is a XFree86 CGA driver out there. However since SVGA and XVGA
monitors and cards are cheap, its really not worth the time and effort
to do such a project.

Subject: Please help with Yamaha CDRW
Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2000 03:55:37 GMT

I have a SYMBIOS SCSI Host Adapter, Yamaha SCSI CDRW, and an Iomega
SCSI ZIP Drive.
Something keeps malfunctioning and I can't figure out what it is.

CDRW is id 6 (Terminated)
ZIP is id 5

I'm not sure of its the cdrw, the scsi card, or the zip drive

The attached messages appear periodically apparently identifying the
cdrw as the culprit.
But the cdrw works fine while in windows. And works fine in linux until
something unknown happens.
So i think that something is just configured improperly. I am running
RedHat 7, PIII 450, 256 MB RAM

This error completely stops the system from responding. for a couple of
seconds, but occurs over and over again.
I have to shutdown the computer. I've checked all tha tI can think of or

know of. Do I have the SCSI chain setup wrong.
Should the CDRW not be the terminator. I thought the last device id is
always the
terminator. Also what do the parity and block size jumpers on the cdrw
accomplish.

Can anyone please, please help. I hate having to go into windows to use
the cdrw.

There are a few things needed to get Red Hat working with the Promise
Ultra 100 controller.

The Red Hat 2.2.16-22 kernel does not support the Promise 100 controller.
You will need to start with an unpatched 2.2.16 kernel and add patches
or start with a 2.4.0-test kernel that includes support for the Promise
202xx controller. The patches are downloaded from any linux kernel mirror
site under /pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/.

Having built the kernel you may finish with an ordinary lilo configuration,
unless you want to be able to boot from a drive that is connected to the
Promise controller. I was able to accomplish this on my system by the
following steps:
1. Copy the kernel to a floppy disk (dd if=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16 of=/dev/fd0).
2. Set the root location on the floppy (rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/hde1).
3. Disconnect any hard drives not connected to the Promise controller.
4. Boot system that has been installed on or moved to the Promise controller
   by using the floppy disk.
5. Configure lilo.conf to write the boot to /dev/hde and run lilo.
6. Configure the BIOS to boot from a scsi drive (the BIOS thinks that the
Promise controller is a scsi controller).

Your own steps may vary, but you should keep in mind the following:

The BIOS will treat one hard disk as device 80 and boot from it. This
may be the Promise disk if it is first on the boot sequence or if there
are no hard disks on controllers that are ahead of the Promise card
in the boot sequence.

The lilo program will treat the Promise hard disk as device 80 only if
there are no hard disks connected to hda, hdb, hdc, or hdd. It is OK to
create a boot sector on hda and later move that disk to the Promise
controller.

Subject: access to 2s SCSI card
Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2000 04:00:28 GMT

I run redHat 6.2 with an inboard SCSI card (adaptec 160M). 2 disks are
connected on this card and linux boot on one of them (sda).
I add another IDE SCSI card (adaptec 160M) to connect external devices
(zip 250 and Dat).

First, I don't change the standard configuration of the cards. But I saw
that Linux didn't reconize the boot disk because he look on SCSI-0, and
SCSI-0 was the IDE card (not the inboard card).
I look on the adaptec reference guide and see that I have to configure
the second card with "no BIOS" with 'crtl-A'.
So, I configure the IDE card with 'no BIOS' (I select scan Bus). Now
Linux reconize my boot disk sda on the SCSI-0 (inboard SCSI card), and
all my devices are seen. This is the result of dmesg command:

The basic problem is that both Caldera and Red Hat have, of late, been
configured with a view to being "desktop systems," with attendant high
expectations for memory and such.

The systems that tend to be more readily "kept down in weight" are:
a) Debian <http://www.debian.org/>
Where the sky is the limit, but an install can start with about 20MB
  of stuff, and
b) Slackware <http://www.slackware.org/>
Where minimalism is taken almost to a fault...

I suggest heading to <http://www.handhelds.org/>, which outlines the
options fairly well.

I would suggest waiting a year; the pricing on "flash RAM" and of the
minscule IBM hard drives are presently spectacularly high; it seems
quite likely that the hardware that will "comfortably" hold a
reasonably extensive Linux-based system will become far less
exorbitant in price over the next year.

Hi,
According to the README.MGA, only the first monitor is supported.
Precision Insight is developing a drinver for the G400 that supports 3D
and dual head, but apparently haven't released anything yet...

Hi,

Same problem her with 3.9.18
I would be hapy if I could just make the first one the "heads"
to work. I dont know if the problem is my build or the
XF86config file.

I would appreciate a XF86config file that works with
the G400 dualhead kart with just one monitor.
