I have the dma timeout on my older Compaq p233, which I think may have a
quantum bigfoot 6gig (only 1 drive in dual boot with win95, caldera 2.4)

Hi all,

BP6 owners are probably aware of "APIC error on CPUx: xx(xx)" error
messages under 2.4.x.

Since virtual interrupt reassignment is part of the MPS 1.4 specification
I have tested going back to MPS 1.1. So far no APIC errors. I have only
tested this for a short while (at high load) and I wonder if this
workaround also fixes the APIC errors that others experience.

Adam

Found it!

It's even simpler. Just use cfdisk in stead of fdisk, and everything works!

Hi,

I owned a 8200 (~2.4GB) and now have a 8500 (~4.5GB) -- the 8200 was a
little bit slow in transfer, the 8500 is a quite nice thing. But even
that won't take HI-8 video tapes -- You will have to tape over some
hole to fool the Exabyte, then it did work for my one read from the
old backup tape.
And it seems not to be recommended since videotapes seem to have
somewhat different design goals then data tapes.

I got the used Exabyte 8500 for 350,-DM (now something like 150
US$).

My local pc bits shop had an Arowana. It was cheap and works fine. 56K

Well, I'm running memtest86 on my machine at home right now. I guess it
takes quite a while to run...

No, I don't have an AMD chip. Pentium III 450 MHz.

And about overheating... Is it, in fact, true that a machine cools itself
better with the case cover on? Mine is usually off since I make hardware
modifications with relative frequency (and the damn IDE cable sometimes
un-connects from one of my cdroms). Would it be advantageous for me to
put it back on? I've heard that the air can flow through the box better
with the case on, but I'm not sure if that is actually correct. My fans
appear to be running fine.

At work we use a Seagate NS20 IDE (ATAPI) drive. Native capacity is 10GB
uncompressed. It has worked very well for over a year now. We do regular
daily, weekly, and monthy backups on it.

This drive runs a little over $200, and the tapes are expensive (as
someone else pointed out). Approximately $30 for a tape (+/- 15%).

With a 4GB hard drive, you could consider alternative backup solutions
for home:

1) Buy a second hard drive and use it for backup. Or use it as your
primary drive and your 4GB as backup.

2) Use a CD-RW drive as backup. You may need to backup onto more than
once CD-R or CD-RW for a full backup, but it's not bad. I use this scheme
at home. The media and drive are cheap compared to tape.

Subject: Re: Modem connects, but I can't use it.

Hello there!

The problem is this:
Once you type in an adress in Netscape and press enter, Netscape will try to
find the ip-adress
of this name ( www.somewhere.net -> ip- xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ). Netscape will then
ask a DNS-name
server for this ip adress.
Here comes the clue: the name of the nameserver can be specified directly in
a file called: /etc/resolv.conf
So if you open this file ( as root ) you may type in the following line:
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

where the x's are the DNS-adress of your ISP's nameserver. ( Normally there
is a secondary nameserver as well
which you may add to the resolv.conf file, typing in another line.
If you have a dual boot with some type of MS-OS you may connect windows to
the net with the modem
and the run: winipcfg
There you will find the two ip-adresses (primary and secondary), write them
down, boot back to Linux
and enter the two adresses into resolv.conf . If you don't have windoze, call
your ISP or use another way
to obtain the two dns-adresses.

To verify that this works ( I think I did a reboot first, but that seems
strange ) , establish the connection
with the modem and then type in a terminal:
# nslookup www.cnn.com
If it works you'll get something like:
Server: dns2.ethz.ch
Address: 129.132.250.220

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: cnn.com
Addresses: 207.25.71.25, 207.25.71.26, 207.25.71.27, 207.25.71.28
          207.25.71.29, 207.25.71.30, 207.25.71.5, 207.25.71.6, 207.25.71.20
          207.25.71.22, 207.25.71.23, 207.25.71.24
Aliases: www.cnn.com
( That was done under Solaris unix )

-And of course Netscape and telnet should then work.

I don't think so. Many "serious" overclockers leave the case off. That way,
the heat isn't trapped in the case. If it's still overheating, then your
hardware is probably defective. If you're still unsure, install lm_sensors and
set up a cronjob like:

* * * * * sensors >> /var/log/sensors

After the next systems crash, you can check the temperatures recorded. HTH

in the meantime I扉e fixed my problem:
the NIC used IRQ 10, which was not dedicated to ISA by BIOS.
Changing the setting in the BIOS-setup fixed my problem.
Found this hint in the Ethernet-HOWTO.html which I found under

?? Never heard of this distinction.
There are:
* RAID-Controllers
* SCSI-Controllers of which some will
        - perform better
        - or worse

But with Software Raid you can even combine partitions on SCSI and IDE
drives.

If its configured you get the info's with
cat \proc\mdstat

There it will tell you if all are running, how many backup partitons
there are and so on.

If you want to test the performance get some benchmark program like
"bonnie" and compare different configurations.

For general Info there is a quite comprehensive Linux
Software-Raid-HowTo.

it shows up in the usbview utility. All I need is some software or utility

need to. I just want to know if there's a simple 'cpio' script that I can
use.

BTW, the linux-usb (http://www.linux-usb.org) web site offers no help when
trying to install usb tape drives. I find this odd since usb can be used
with so many devices. oh well...

Thanks in advance,

Nathan
