Subject: SCSI-III IBM harddisk at Adaptec 2940UW
Date: Fri, 09 Mar 2001 22:43:25 +0100

Hi,

I have connected an IBM SCSI-III harddisk (DDYS-T18350N) to an Adaptec
2940UW adapter on the wide channel. At the moment for testing the
harddisk it is the only device at the adapter (accept an active terminator).

I want to use the harddisk with Suse Linux 6.3. Whem I am loading the
driver aic7xxx (version 5.1.20 / 3.2.4), I get the following messages:

aborting command due to timeout: pid 7, scsi 0, channel 0, id 8, lun 0
   test unit ready 00 00 00 00 00

SCSI host 0 abort (pid 7) timed out - resetting

SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0

SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 7) timed out - trying harder

SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0

   .
   .
   .

The last four lines are repeated until I turn off the computer.

Other devices (two harddisks, a CD-ROM drive, a tape-drive) on the
narrow channel are working fine.

Windows NT 4 is also installed is working correct with the IBM harddisk.

Also I sent the harddisk back to the supplier for checking, if there is
something wrong with it.

But he said the harddisk is working correct.

I have tested every parameter in the Adaptec BIOS and every jumper at
the harddisk. I tried a new SCSI cable, but nothing solves the problem.

Does anybody know what I can do?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance to all!

Matthias

I'm in the UK and want to buy a good modem to use with Linux. I don't want
to spend too much as I hope that I can move up from V90 before too long. I'm
hoping for comments about Diamond Supra Express PCI V90 modems.

Are they good?

Easy to use for a Linux newbie?

Would an ISA one have any advantages/disadvantages?

Any suggestions about a better brand?

Finally, I'm looking at Dabs. Anyone got any recommendations for a good
on-line retailer in UK?

TIA

Under the previous Operating System... were you able to toggle the speakers
via software? If so and your motherboard BIOS doesn't have the speaker
selection option, you may be SOL.

The only other alternative I can think of is if HP supports Linux on your
Vectra VA. A visit to HP's support webpage is called for. You may even have
to send a few support requests.

May I also suggest you visit the Linux Hardware Database at:
http://lhd.datapower.com/

That failing... A drastic fix is needed... like turning off the sound chips
on the motherboard and plugging in a supported sound solution....

Possibly there's a better solution there for you.

Cheers.

That's an LVD hard drive, and you've got it on an SE chain. That *can*
work (but you're taking a massive speed hit on the hard drive). Make sure
that you've got the right type of terminator.

Have you tried jumpering the "Force SE mode" pin on the drive? How long
is your total (intenal + external) chain? What color was the goat?

Hello all: I'm new to RedHat and I can't seem to get Xconfigurator to make
my S3 86C365 Trio3D vid card work the way it should. All I can get is
480X680 and looks like 'less' than 256 colors. The card does better than
that in WinMe. I have it set to Generic Multisync monitor (monitor's not
listed, it's a A Plus Info Corp Digital/Non-Interlaced 14") and it doesn't
matter which S3 option I set in Xconfigurator I don't get a decent screen.
Sometimes I get one that's MASSIVE, and can only see just the centre. Most
of the time it's smaller than the monitor, nice black border all around the
image, and 256 colors. I've read the info for XF86Config and I've had a go
at editing the file but I think I don't understand it well enough. Please
help.
Thanks

Is the video driver required on the CA810E (Does the on-board video do text
mode OK)? When not using the video driver with both RH6.2 and RH7.0, three
of four CA810E's run fine for weeks unless I try to do anything with them.
Then they randomly lock up under heavy disk and cpu load, image processing.
Is the video the issue here? I don't want to mess with the upgrade and
don't run Xwindows.

Sometimes a kernel panic message appears, but means not much to me.
Problems killing an idle process are common. Otherwise, crond or swapper are
mentioned as the process; and sometimes the words are about virtual pages

log in on another virtual console, sometimes a login on second console
flashes error message and then freezes. 866/256MB memory of the correct

kick myself. Thanks for any advice.

There is support for the i8xx under 2.4.2 ( CONFIG_SOUND_ICH ) but I'm
pretty sure it's not in any previous kernel. So -the answer would seem
to be to get the latest kernel sources and build a new kernel. This
kernel does work fine with 7.2.

I have RedHat 7. I have Intel D815EEA motherboard, which came with
integrated video, audio/sound, and LAN. Both video and LAN work great, but
I have problems with audio/sound. The volume is extremely low, and when I
turn the volume up using some sound utility, the sound is distored and I
hear clicks. I almost tried ALSA, but did not have time to.

I believe Wavelan sells both ISA and PCI cards, though I've heard rumors that
the PCI card is not that compatible unless your motherboard is really new.
Another thought is to get one of the consumer access points/hub that also does
basic firewall services. Note, I suspect you might need to look at security
further, since having a wireless network behind a firewall, opens more doors
for people to get in, without tightening things down.

Maybe I should just reinstall my Redhat 7 installation and it would pick it

If the card is compatible with Linux then I would have thought that providing
you are using Kudzu that it would automatically detect that the card was
present and prompt you with a choice to install the appropriate driver. You
may have to compile the appropriat kernel module for the Linksys card or you
may have to recompile the kernel to provide support.

I would search through your /lib/modules/<version_number>/net and see whether
or not you have a LinkSys module compiled. Under RedHat 6.2 I see it as a
"tulip" driver, but I am not sure whether RedHat 7 has a specific driver or
whether it uses the tulip driver as well.

If there is a tulip.o file in your modules file you might like to try to add
the following to /etc/conf.modules:
alias eth0 tulip.o.

I hope this provides you with some starting point.

See ya

There should be a way to make this configuration work.
I recommend downloading the Lilo documentation (that comes with the
Lilo code). It's pretty thorough and discusses how to set up.

This means that some or all hosts will be unreachable.
perhaps there is a problem with your name server?
if your site must use a nine-route name server, you will need to set the $
socks_nsenvironment variable to point to the appropriate name server. It
may(or may not)be necessary to set this variable, or the socks host
preference, to the IP address of the host in question rather than its name.

Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Dig around on Google for Linux Tape Cert (I think www.linuxtapecert.org,
or something like that). They have some info on the contortions
necessary to make the IDE Onstream drives work under Linux.
