IIRC, the Intel compiler beats GCC in benchmarks. This issue was discussed somewhere in the past (maybe Slashdot), but the benchmarks compared the performance of standard programs, not the kernel. I think that GCC is inferior in comparison to the "native" compiler in other platforms too, such as Solaris (is it true that Sun-CC is MUCH faster than GCC?)
