It depends on the distribution you use.
In my RH6.1, I have done like this. After you configure soundcard, it
creates the file /etc/sysconfig/soundcard. But in startkde it is shown
as /etc/sysconfig/sound. Change it to soundcard. It should work.
Startkde is in /usr/bin/ in RH6.1.
