True, but if you have done *nothing* with the disk other than
repartitioning, then you can recover some if not all of the data by
repartitioning your disk exactly as it was partitioned earlier, mark the
partition types to the relavent values before your abortive gnu/linux
install and try accessing the partition *w/o* formatting. i.e. in case of
dos, assuming your dos partition was hda1, just try accessing it as c:. It
may work, but I don't guarantee anything.
Your chances are better if you want to salvage data just from the first
physical partition (not necessarily hda1).
