[Following up to my own mail]
While searching on google, I found a message posted by Satish
K. Pagare on lih with a link to a program called VCDKutter developed
by him as a front end to mtvp. It is available at
http://www.geocities.com/asatsi/vcdkutter.html
This gives the much required functionality of only saving certain
parts of vcd's which is otherwise not available in mtv. Secondly it
permits fast-forwarding and rewinding in mtvp which is otherwise not
possible.
Satish, if you are still on this list, GREAT JOB!
