I am also using GVC 33.6 modem under linux for the last 2 years. It works fine.
My initialization strings in wvdial are :
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 S11=55 +FCLASS=0
Init3 = ATX1
Init4 = ATM1L1
