The 2.4.x kernel series requires you to use modutils version 2.4.0
atleast. The curent availableversion of modutils is 2.4.6, get it as
well as the latest versions of required packages as specified in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes. You will probably also need to
upgrade binutils, util-linux and ppp, as well as pcmcia packages(if
you are using it). Try building teh kernel after getting these and
see if it works out..
