The reason for the larger than screen desktop is (most probably) because
of X trying to use a desktop size as big as the largest resolution mode...
So if you currently use 800x600 screen resolution but also have a 1024x768
mode available, X will set the desktop size to 1024x768.
You might want to use the X configuration utility to disable this and only
use a desktop equal to the screen resolution...
