Most likely the new make installed itself in
/usr/local/bin, but your PATH has /usr/bin before
that, so the old /usr/bin/make is getting invoked.

I'd suggest rpm -e make, or better rpm -U
ftp://some.mirror/path/to/make-new.rpm.
