Didn't get your point here ... AFAIK, there is no LOST on LILO
as yet. If you are suggesting use of xosl in a  LOST, welcome.
I'll give this "xosl" a try. Can put up a  LOST  based  on the
results.

Obviously wrong. You can create a boot disk at any time, be it
with dedicated software like mkbootdisk, scripts (like the one
on my site), loadlin or syslinux ...

That's interesting. How dos DOS software make a LILO boot disk ?

Not quite, MBR is suitable enough, though keeping at 1st sector
of root partition is advisable.

Debian on /deb/hdb1
Pygmy on /dev/hda1 (UMSDOS)

To get the  ls of directories only without a listing of files
in that directory:
$ls -d */        .... if you are on bash shell.
You may  alias a command ( alias lsd='ls -d */' ) and place it 
in your .profile or the sytem /etc/profile ...
