Adding on to what Naren said: iptables has more features and functionality 
than ipchains. So, if you're trying to get a firewall up for the first time, 
try learning iptables. Even if you're comfortable with ipchains, you could 
still give iptables a try. And their syntax is quite similar.

Rusty Russel has written a iptables-howto and an ipnatctl-howto. You should 
be able to find them if you search on google.

Considering the number of virii and exploits floating around, I'd consider it 
a wise precaution to have a firewall installed even on a personal box 
connected to the net on a dial-up. One can never be too careful......
