Most soundcards (that I have seen) have two inputs - a mono mic input,
and a stereo line in. The mic input usually has a preamp on it, so for
anything other than a mic, you should use the line in, which is stereo
as well.

The line in input takes a standard line level input..

I guess piping the wav data to lame should be fine, but make sure that
your system is fast enough to do the encoding in realtime! :-)
