i couldn't follow the recent exchange on setting proper permissions for files on vfat partitions. everybody seems to be using the 2.4.9 kernel or newer. i am still stuck with the 2.4.3 that pcq distributed in their update cd to pcq linux 7.1. i always thought that proper file permissions could not be set on fat or vfat partitions, and have till now remained satisfied to see the executable bit set on all such files. ownership of those files can't be changed either - all of them belong to root. when, as root, i copy or move a file belonging to a normal user from the ext2 filesystem to a windows partition, bash always tells me that it was unable to retain ownership and file permissions for it. this i took to mean the kernel driver for vfat filesystems could not handle file permissions yet. but now it seems this can be done, after all. can it be done on 2.4.3 ? please tell me how (details please: which files to edit and what else to do). thanks. - t.
