o You need to remove your old (rpm) installed sendmail.
  
o 'make install' of tarball will not  update  your  rpm
  package database. To have this updated, use  a script
  called "checkinstall".  See LOST below.  It is linked
  on www.freshmeat.net as well.  
  
o Alternatively, if you know how to make a  rpm  from a 
  self made binary tarball, you can install  your comp-
  iled binary using rpm itself.

If you install packages after local compilations, use the bash
script "checkinstall", in place of 'make install'.It will make
necessary entries into the package  database  for  your distro
