I agree. It's a good idea to provide a default database location. But It would
be even better if there is a /etc/postgresql/postgres.config which contains
parameters for flags like -F/-D/-B and system tuning parameters like SHMMAX. A
place where I can say something like this.
-----------------------------
buffers=128
SHMMAX=128MB
datadir=/mnt1/dbs
maxclients=40
-----------------------------

People are going to need it and it's not very difficult to provide. At present
it's not possible to pass any odd flags or set variable values, taking away much
of flexibility.

There are other advantages also. One is people learn available parameters at one
glance and secondly, well documented and examplified configuration files are
hell of a starting point compared to well documented but lengthy manuals.(I love
debian's lilo.conf for this. I have yet to see a better configuration file than
that.)

I got to crib this to mandrake. I use mandrake8.1 BTW.

In fact, every service should have a separate configuration like this. I think
most of the servises have them already. There are few of them like this which
are missed.
